Very fine antique wood carving from China made into a mirror. Circa late 1800s. The wood carving features a man admiring a flower in the garden. The carving is an open work carving which has design carving through it. The carving is lacquered and covered in gold leaf. The gold has worn off over the years. I have framed the carving and added a mirror so that it becomes a functional and interesting piece of antique. The frame is a hand carved wooden frame covered with gold leaf. If you look carefully each section is slightly different. The frame alone is a great piece of artwork. These carvings were from old wooden houses. This carving could be a piece of an old window. Old houses in China were demolished in great numbers to make way for new development from the'70s. They were literally thrown out or burned then. When the pinnacle of ceramic making was achieved in the Choson period. Finely potted grey stoneware dipped in white slip with whitish clear glaze over the top and Iron decoration. A later silver rim has been attached to the rim, I have checked closely and it does not appear to be masking any chips or other damage so was probably added to protect a highly regarded item and to protect the user from contaminants as silver was widely believed to do. The carefully crafted strong foot has traces of the five clay spacers that it would have been fired on. This exquisite item sits beautifully within the hands. Fine ANTIQUE CHINESE CARVED ROCK CRYSTAL VESSEL- Quartz- Dragon Handle Pot A very unique and interesting item is this Antique Chinese quartz crystal pot which has been carved from a single piece of rock crystal retaining the natural complexities of the stone. The handles have been carved in dragon motifs which suggest Chinese origin. It is an unusual shape to be a snuff bottle and looks older than most examples rock crystal snuff bottles. I have been advised that similar rock crystal carvings were known to have been made during the Liao Dynasty. Later periods also produced clear quartz carvings such as when carved hard-stone objects travelled from the Mughal empire across to Qing China(notably during the 18th century) The variation in patina suggests that it is very old and is more likely to be ancient than 18th century.
