The only thing I see wrong with it is that the back of the side pieces has a support brace missing on the left hand bracket, but other than that it is nice. We will detail out the cracked panel and make sure it is tight and sturdy prior to shipping. The overall size is 54 inches wide, 17 inches deep on the base, 21 inches high to the marble, and 98 inches high to the top. Antique 1793 Brass Iron John Carter's Literary Machine Reading Stand Dictionary
For your consideration is a wonderful antique Brass and Cast Iron Reading Stand or Book Stand. This wonderful piece was made by John Carter and patented as the"Literary Machine" Carter developed these stands to hold books from the 1780's to the early 1800's. This one is from the early 1790's. Later models had a seat added. Adjustable to many heights and angles as you can see from the many angles and tightening areas. This model has the page holder to keep the book open at the top. And page turners at the bottom and sides. Cast iron base which is very heavy and has claw feet. I believe the wood is a mahogany but not really sure. This is really a state of the art of the time. This style would have been used for reading speeches or literature. Was used later by the owner for singing opera. Some of the moving pieces are ... morehard to turn, a little tender loving care would help this piece back to original condition. This piece would really make a statement to anyone seeing it. This exceptionally elegant ca. 1790 hand crafted provincial wall console measures 31 ½” tall x 13 ½” wide x 17 3/8” deep and features pine secondary woods with dove tailed and wrought nailed construction. Its characteristics details are delicately carved with a soft refinished patina and many stains and dings of age. You will note evidence of minor very old(inactive) worm damage. The swell front is masterfully constructed with tricky but well crafted drawer profiles. The drawer bottoms are applied directly to the sides without rabbet as one would expect from a late 1700s/early 1800s piece. For sale is a Literary Machine constructed by John Carter in the late 1700's& early 1800's. This model has a seat. So it's probably early 1800's-vintage. Sturdy and fully functional, this piece has been passed through at least 4 or 5 generations of my wife's family. We are downsizing- thus it's availability. Constructed of brass, cast iron and(I believe) mahogany, all parts have full functionality and will make quite the gift/addition for the antique lover in the family. These rare pieces generally sell for $900- $1500, so this one is a great deal@ $695. S/H is a bit high due to the weight- the machine will be disassembled for shipping to save on shipping costs.
