Antique Victorian Era Estate Wood& Silver Rosary Signed ROMA 800 Description Collectible antique Victorian era wood& what I believe to be silver rosary signed ROMA 800 on the back of the crucifix. The word Roma is written in handwritten script rather than block letters. The beads are oval and round, the round ones have silver bead caps, the center has Mary on one side and Christ on the other. Laid flat it measures 19.5" and it is in good antique condition but is missing one bead and there is some age related patina& oxidation in the crevices on the cross and center. Antique Rosary Miniature Ladies Victorian mourning rosary (Civil War)
I've tried to show how tiny this dainty little antique catholic rosary is. About 10 1/2 inches long with tiny beads. I placed a regular sized rosary and a dollar and a quarter for scale. Rolled up it is about the size of a quarter. I was told years ago that this is a Victorian ladies rosary and the reason it is so tiny was so that she could tuck it in her clothing during her lengthy"mourning" period"and/OR" it was so small because metal was scarce during war time(Civil War? WWI? If anyone knows for sure if this is circa Civil War; I would love to know. Thank you. The black beads are glass; the tiny beads are NOT all exactly uniform in size(which in my mind verifies the age of it) Chain. Crucifix and medal all tarnished/some light rust from age. Precious. Timeless. Stunning. These are the only words I keep coming to for describing this piece. A Victorian rosary by itself is beautiful. But this one is outstanding. It features early Czech Saphiret beads. If you're unfamiliar with Saphiret Glass; it is an absolute treasure. It was an early glass used in jewelry and was made in Gablonz Czechoslovakia in the late 1800's through the turn of the century. Saphiret glass was made ... moreby adding real pure gold to sapphire colored molten glass. Collectors treasure the earliest Czech pieces as the color is more rich and stunning. Later pieces were made in Germany are called'Sappharine' they are still beautiful. And command high prices- but the color is not as fascinating as the Czech pieces. SIZE~ This rosary is 21-1/2" long. The center drop from the bottom of the heart to the bottom of the cross is 4-1/2" by itself. The cross by itself is 1-1/4" x 3/4" wide. There are 51 smaller beads that are 4.5 mm on average each. And 6 larger beads that are approximately 6.5 mm each. They vary in size as they were hand made and have hand cut facets. SIGNATURE~ The reverse of the cross is signed B.B. and also has engraved initials. CONDITION~ At first when I came across this piece I thought it was missing two beads. I counted 57. And a traditional rosary has 59. There are two elongated spaces where beads could have been at one point. HOWEVER, I have been told that a 57 bead rosary is a"Chaplet of Divine Mercy" rosary, and the previous owner could have had it converted and had those beads taken off, or it was made that way. The connector and crucifix shines so beautiful when the light hits it to reflect many colors. The crucifix has a silver tone metal corpus attached and drilled thru the Mother of Pearl.The attachment used at the Crucifix is antique and original to the piece. The double wires are still strong and it's a work of art for someone to treasure.
