ANTIQUE Beautiful Oriental Wood-Mahogany Violin Gold or Opium Pocket Scale, OX
This is a very nice antique scale. It is either a gold scale or an opium scale. Oriental(Japanese or Chinese) Nice rich dark wood. Possibly mahogany. Hand carved. I do believe that the scale is Ox bone. Brass weight and dish. The wood has aged nicely. Metal piece slides back to hold two sides together. There are markings on the ox bone, not sure what the measurements are. This piece does have some wear. A crack forming on one side where the metal joint is. The strings are broken. This vintage Opium scale is from a local estate. Very unique. Made of hand carved wood, cover has an Elephant design, small metal weight inside also has elephant on it. Stick that scale& weight hang from is notched with tiny holes so as you slide weight along it you can decide the weight. Note inside reads: Old(antique? opium scale purchased in Thailand on trip Dec. 1991. Very good condition, it measures: 14 1/4" long, 3 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" high. Vintage Japanese Gold Measuring Weighing Scale AKA Opium Scale
This is weighing scale from Japan. Judging from the shape of the case. This one is from the early 1900's. These are often thought to be an"Opium Scale" This may have been true in China, but Japan did not have an opium problem. There this was a general purpose scale(Called a"Hakari" most commonly used for small expensive items in Japan like gold, make up or when buying tobacco. We've managed to demonstrate how it is used with a very light Japanese 1945 aluminum 10 sen coin. Photos# 4- 8) The item to be weighed is placed in the pan. The pivot is held in the hand or hung like this one and then the weight is slid down the shaft until they horizontally balance. The person measuring would then read the measurement on the stick where the weight is hanging and that would be the accurate measurement. This was before Japan ... morewas metric. The measurements are in"Mom'me" One Mom'me is equal to 3.75 grams. This is actually a very ingenious idea and it was used all through Asia up to the early 1900's. The shaft is ox bone. There are very tiny marks cut into it at regularly spaced intervals for the measurements. The pan is made of horn. There is some damage to the outside of the pan. See photo# 3.There is a sticker on the top of the wood case. This shows that the weights have been calibrated. They were checked every so often and if the weights were inaccurate they were confiscated and the owner had to pay a fine and for the repair of the weights. This was a very real burden to a poor farmer. The shaft is 8 inches long(20.5 cm) We have other antique/vintage Japanese items on our ebay site. These are often thought to be an"Opium Scale" This may have been true in China, but Japan did not have an opium problem. This was a general purpose scale(Called a"Hakari" most commonly used for small expensive items in Japan like gold, make up or when buying tobacco. The weight(photo#8) is positioned on the white'Kotsu' calibrated stick. The position of this weight on the stick counters the weight in the pan. The item to be weighed is placed in the pan or hung ... moreon the hook just above the pan. One of the two pivots is held in the hand and then the weight is slid down the long stick until they balance. The person measuring would then read the measurement on the stick and that would be the accurate measurement. This was before Japan was metric. The measurements are in"Mom'me" One Mom'me is equal to 3.75 grams. If the item to be weighed is too heavy for that pivot then the stick is turned over. The pan swivels to the other side and the person weighing then holds the other pivot and the weight is read from the other side. Oriental scale hand forged opium antique rare
Hand forged oriental scale is what I'm guessing! Perhaps for weighing opium since it seems to match the small ones. But I could not find one anywhere this size! It's 45" long and 1" in diameter at its widest spot. The wood looks like teak and there is oriental characters along its length. Both tips are brass as well as the pointer, but the hook is definitely hand forged iron. I'm again guessing late 1800' s. Feel free to email me any questions, I will do my best to answer them. This is a great grouping of antique weights with a little stand included. The tallest weights measures 1 5/8" high. The 2 small ones measure 1 1/8" high. Antique Opium weights - set of 7 with opium scale and scale container
I bought these in the Golden Triangle(Thailand. Burma and Laos) when I was working there for the United Nations opium poppy replacement project in 1973-74. I spent a year with the UN there doing a socio-economic survey of the hill tribes that were growing opium. I often stayed for a week or more at a time in hill tribe villages interviewing the households and measuring opium and other fields. Vintage Antique Chinese Opium Scale brass metal bone & rose wood w/ weight old
This is a nice looking item. I got it from an estate. I didn't know much about it. But it looked nice to me so I purchased it. From what I could find out its a Chinese Opium Scale. It has a bone handle for holding the scale, a brass weight which has chinese writing on one side and some kind of scroll work on the other. The case is made from wood which looks like rosewood. There are some brass accents as well. The wood case is approx 9 3/4 inches long. I took alot of photos showing these items mentioned. As noted Its an estate find so I don't know alot about it.
