I am listing a beautiful necklace I strung. Made with ancient, 2000 year old glass shard beads from the Bactrian culture in north Afghanistan and Pakistan. The silk route ran through this area and it was a major trading center for more than 600 years, so these are sometimes called Roman beads. The beads are spectacular shades of blue. I believe it is of Chinese origin(basing that on the carved cinnabar and the carved brown bead) There are 10 beads ornately constructed with gilded rondelles and end pieces each hanging from a 15 1/2" gilded necklace that is stamped with the same pattern and is 10mm in width. The beads range from about 10mm to 20mm in width and on average hang about 1 1/2" down. There appears to be one missing since there is the black hanging bead as the photo shows. The 1st looks like a beautiful marble- next is an inlaid turqoise with an inlaid star pattern- then a orange peel like black bead that feels like celluloid to me- an olive brown carved with Chinese ... morecharacters and pictures- a orange and pale sky blue circular double bead that may be bakelite- a carved cinnabar with a lotus flower- a green/black/gold round bead that reminds me of a fountain pen material- a sapphire blue very odd shaped bead of glass(sort of looks like a head to me of an animal) a dark green ball of jade that has a cap of black celluloid and finally the last bead is a bright red bead with inlaid swirls of raised copper enamel and has a four petal topper. A most rare and unusual necklace. There are no markings. The clasp has an antique easy lock type spring ring that is a bit tight and needs some lubrication. Heavy it weighs 84 grams. Some from the early 1800s ~ came from the estate of a collector of Alaska native antiquities. The Russians include 22 blue compound t u b ing. 18 blue simple tubing, one clear and one green. Th e three center Russians are the prized deep ultramarine 7-sided simple tub ing. They measure 9.2x11mm. 9x11mm an d 9x12mm. The olivella shells. Traded up the coast fr om Ca lifornia. Are 19x11mm and 21x12mm. The 7 rolled copper beads probably originated in the prehistoric native copper mines of British Columbia. Which supplied much the Pacific Northwest. Beads in the early contact period also were fashioned from copper salvage d from the bottoms of wrecked shi ps. The largest here measures ... more31x8mm ~ the others. 25x5.5, 24x5mm, 24x4mm, 22x3.5mm. 16x3.5mm, and, at the tie-off, 9x4.5mm. The 23 tubular and oval hand-drilled bone beads also are prehistoric. The longest of these is 4mm. The widest 6mm. There is a single s mall(16x4.3mm) dentali um shell bead. There are two an omalous beads: a small Bohemian 6-sided blue s atin bugle and a s mall purple Prosser molded bead. Two of the medium compound Russian blues have fractures parall el to the perforation. And one of the small blues has m ultiple fractures. Several other beads are chipped. Mostly. All are glass and gold was used to accent the veins in leaves and to accent the flowers. The closure is a large green glass bead with a star design that is also filled with gold accent. Length of necklace is approximately 27" Flower beads are 3/8" across, leaves are just shy of 1/2" long. This is basically an over the head style necklace because the nylon string that the beads are strung on is attached at the clasp. I have a picture showing what I am referring to. Sandwiching gold or silver foil between glass is an ancient technique. The technique was revived in the 1920's in Czech and parts of Germany. However the Japanese became the largest producers of these beads. Necklace has a clasp but it easily slips over the head. Measures 53 1/2" end to end. There's a total of 15 green foil beads and 10 filigree or'cage' beads. Chain is very attractive and adds a quality look to the beads. Up for bid is another delightful recent estate find. This is a vintage amethyst Beaded necklace. The purple Amethyst beads appear to be glass. I counted over 140 beads(143) Each bead measures 1/4" in length and is multi faceted. They feel cold to the touch. Strung in between each Amethyst bead is a round goldtone metal bead. These small beads are unmarked as to content so I'm not certain as to the metal. The necklace is lengthy and measures 55" long. There is a small ring clasp.
