This item was handed down to me so I do not have a ton of info on it however it was made in Michigan and has the grand rapids refrigerator metal plate on the back And also has lowneys chocolate company etched into the mirror on the backside of the ice box. This auction is for an ornate antique Baldwin Ice Box Latch. Has patent April 12. 1892 on the back. It is made of Brass. The backplate is 5" x 2" We do not have the catch- keeper. This is a very nice Antique Lawco Window Refrigerator Ice Box. Made by the F.H. Lawson Company of Cincinnati Ohio which started business in 1816. Mostly making galvanized iron trash cans and garbage pails.Just after the Civil War, these window boxes started being made, but only as a custom order from this company. These were made to sit on outside of the windowsill with 2 wires fastening it to the window frame. Something like we mount our window air conditioners. This measures approx. 23" x 15" x 12" and has a shelf on the inside with small perforated vent holes on each side. It has a turn latch to secure the door and handles on each side. This is a cool refurbished antique ice box. It has been converted into a cabinet that can be used for a Pantry. Laundry Room Etc. It is painted Orange which could be changed to any color you prefer. The wood on the doors have been removed to only leave the metal. The back is a solid sheet of old galvanized tin. It is metal with all of the original hardware except a cool glass knob on the main door has been added. Thick glass shelving has been added inside and painted a dark gray. 8 door Lig-O-Nier Ice Block refrigerator- circa 1880s. Center door- the Ice tray- holds a 200 pound block of ice. Exterior oak(stained but generally unfinished) Interior. Wood(birch, galvanized metal, lead, and some particle(hard) board) includes 5 pieces of original shelving. Interior was re furbished with gloss white Rustoleum and oil based enamel- white. Exterior- 6 layers of paint removed to get to original(though rough) finish. This piece is in excellent shape and is ready to be restained, refinished, or painted to your liking. Windows are triple panes. Over the course of it's life- two lights were added to the right and left bays. Based on the wiring and light sockets- some time in the 1950's or early 1960s. One hole was drilled through the back in the Ice chamber are- presumably to add an exterior mounted refrigeration unit. ... moreThis unit was recovered/salvaged from the basement of the Fort Madision. Iowa, Daily Democrat newspaper in 1983. The unit then was on my parents farm in West Point, Iowa until they let the farm go. I took the unit to my home to finish the project that never really got started, stripped the unit down, cleaned up the inside, and rehung the doors with all original Lig-O-Nier hardware. The hardware was always original, but the doors were taken off when the unit was moved out to the farm. 31" deep. 86" wide. 75 1/2" tall. Weighs- between 500 and 700 pounds.it weighs a lot. With the exception of the crack in the wood in the lower door seen in the last photo and the back of the piece which just has not had any work done on it seen in picture 11 the piece is in wonderful condition with all the original hardware. The box measures about 52 inches high by 29 inches wide by 20 inches deep rounded to the nearest inch and measured from the top of the piece for the last two measurements. Antique Baldwin Ice Box/Refrigerator Door Handle w/latch 1892
This is the handle and latch for an antique Baldwin Ice Box. Handle measures about 6" overall and 4" center to center of screw holes. This handle also has a lock but I don't have the key. The latch measures 3.50" overall and screw holes are 2.25" center to center. The very tip of the handle screw has been filed flat and lost its point but should make no difference in the mounting procedure. Great patina and excellent condition. This gorgeous antique refrigerator/ice box measures 25" deep by 48" wide by 70" tall. The exterior is chestnut and the storage parts are lined with milk glass porcelain. It is in excellent condition though there are a couple of cracks along the sides of the fridge(see photos) and one of the hinges is slightly loose and doesn't sit perfectly when closed(see photos) This is an exquisite piece and would make a marvelous addition to any home!
