March 14, 1864 Frank Leslie pioneered the use of illustrations in newspapers. Precursors of documentary photography. These pictures gave Leslie's readers a sense of immediacy by enhancing the text of the battlefield reports he published in his national weekly. The pictures were produced from sketches made of actual battle scenes by the roving artists Leslie commissioned. From their pencil drawings Leslie and his team created wood engravings for the printing process. These images create an almost photographically vivid description of the panoramas. Battle tactics, uniforms, and personages of the war. These sketches were all done in the field as they were happening. By different artists, then ... morepublished in Harpers Weekly Newspaper. I have been selling these matted and shrink wrapped in my store and at shows. Now that I have retired I'm just moving inventory out at low low prices. Some of these have sold for a good sum. Depending on subject matter. Some are selling for over $150.00 right now on the net. Taken from Frank Leslies Illustrated History of the Civil war. Done in the late 1800's. Will look great framed. We try to save every page or picture possible in the rescue of these 100+ year old damaged books. Very brittle with some edge fraying and typical foxing of paper this old. Measures 12 x 16.5 inches. These make great gifts for a collector or because of a local town or even someones birthdate or family name. They look great in an office too. I sell 4 different sizes. GUSTAVUS DE RUSSY(1818-1891) Uncommon ALS 4to. To Union Paymaster Nichols regarding personal matters. Savannah, GA 10/20/ny. Darkly penned, fine condition. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, DeRussy was a full-rank captain in the Regular Army. He was highly commended by George B. McClellan during the Peninsula Campaign for his ability to stay under control during difficult circumstances(see image) During the same campaign he commanded the Artillery Reserve of Heintzelman's III Corps when he earned the brevets of major and lieutenant colonel for his conduct at Malvern Hill and Fair Oaks. DeRussy commanded the guns on Burnside's right at the battle of Fredericksburg and on March 17, 1863 entered volunteer service as colonel of the 4th New York Artillery.
