Their goal was the restoration of a colonial Virginia capital. A hand-drawn copy of the Frenchman's Map ... moretold them where to look. It is part of the lore of Colonial Williamsburg, The original Frenchman's Map, a detailed view of the streets and buildings of Williamsburg drawn near the end of the Revolutionary War, is easy to find today. It is preserved with the other priceless documents of American history in the rare books room at the College of William and Mary's Earl Greg Swem Library. The map with the intriguing name, discovered between the pages of an old book, helped uncover eighteenth-century Williamsburg, a treasure more valuable than anything marked by an X on a pirate's map. Vintage Map of the World by Claudius Ptolemy Reproduction Antique Print Claudius Ptolemy was born c. AD 90– died c. AD 168. Ptolemy was a Roman citizen of Egypt who wrote in Greek. He was a mathematician. Astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and poet(of a single epigram in the Greek Anthology) He lived in Egypt under Roman rule, and is believed to have been born in the town of Ptolemais Hermiou in the Thebaid. This theory, proposed by Theodore Meliteniotes, could be correct, but it is late(ca. 1360) and unsupported. There is no reason to suppose that he ever lived anywhere else than Alexandria, where he died around AD 168. Ptolemy was the author of several scientific treatises. At least three of which were of continuing importance to later Islamic and European science. Intended as a navigational map for the French, this map has longitude marks based on different meridians, including Paris. Such notations are not found in the 1734 map. Fr. Murillo Velarde’s map of 1734 is considered as the first accurate map of the Philippines. Fr. Murillo Velarde was a Jesuit, moral theologian, canon lawyer and historian whose interest included map-making and geography. He had served at one time as parish priest of Antipolo, known for its black Madonna, the Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buenviaje but for much of his life he was assigned to the Jesuit Colegio de Manila in the walled city called Intramuros. The brown cloth covers 13.5x8 have"Burr's Map Of The State of Coha. Texas Published By J.H. Colton& Co. New York" stamped in gilt. Full color. Streeter refers ... moreto this map as"the first large scale map of Texas. to show all of Texas to the Arkansas River" and states that"The Burr map. Like the Austin Map, is one of the landmarks of Texas cartography. The detail on the land grants is the best for its time. The 1833 issue shows a smaller Texas extending west to the 103rd meridian, whereas the 1834 and 1835 issues show a much expanded Texas extending west to about the 106th meridian and north to the Arkansas River. Although the present county was part of DeWitt's colony and settlement dates to colonization in 1825, the county ... moreofficially has two dates of origin. The first, DeWitt County(Judicial) was formed on February 2, 1842, but was declared unconstitutional along with other judicial counties later that autumn. The present DeWitt County was formed from Goliad, Gonzales, and Victoria counties in 1846 and named for empresario Green DeWitt. It comprises 910 square miles, most of which is nearly level to sloping; the areas of greatest elevation are mostly in the northwest. The elevation ranges from about 150 feet above sea level in the east corner to more than 540 feet above sea level in the southwest. The eastern corner and an area along the Gonzales county line falls in the Post Oak Savannah belt, characterized by tall grasses and, along streams, oak, elm, and pecan trees.
