A Beautiful Classic Antique Map with Superb Color! Size: The map image measures approximately 10 1/2 by 13 inches on a 12 1/4 by 15 1/4" page with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good condition for its age. Basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a couple of chips off the edge and a short edgetear, margins have been slightly cropped and some light handling around the margins, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that is rare to fine in this condition. It is printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. 1877 Mitchell's New General Atlas 83 Plates 140 Maps & Plans Folio Very Rare VG
Mitchell's New General Atlas. Containing Maps of the Various Countries of the World, Plans of Cities, Etc. Embraced in Eighty three Quarto Maps, Forming a Series of One Hundred and Forty Maps and Plans, Together with Valuable Statistical Tables a List of Post Offices of the United States and its Territories and Census of 1860 and 1870. Philadelphia: S Augustus Mitchell.No. 31 South Sixth Street; 1877. 122 pages + 37 pages of reference material at rear. Folio: 15.5" by 12.5" Quarter leather& brick cloth with gilt and black tooled decoration on the upper board. Pagination is irregular. There are two additional maps to the 83 on the title page, Turkey/ Greece and the 13 Colonies. This is the only extant example of the 1877 edition with the 33 additional plates and 60 additional maps. The exquisite ornate borders give these ... moremaps a true Victorian look. The hand coloring is expert and precise. Again this is a larger and more extensive collection of maps than the earlier edtions from the 1860's and early 1870's. Condition: All major defects are shown in the photos. The binding is still together. Which is of course rare for atlases of this size and age. Overall I would say the maps are in very good to near fine condition. The map of New Jersey has a red stain(a bleed from a long gone bookmark. There is some toning mostly to the edges and margins with a few scattered light fox marks. The spine title is completely gone, the spine leather is crazed, the head and tail are very worn and tattered. The tail corner of the top board is badly rubbed and the leather is just about gone. There is a for inch crack in the top gutter. There is a long crack btween the last free endpaper and the title. Ther is water damage to the lower board that stops at the first endpaper and DOES NOT affect any of the text or maps. Overall a rare and beautiful collection of maps.

Very rare and very important. 1851 American Atlas by Augustus Mitchell fully titled"A New Universal Atlas Containing Maps of the various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World. With a special map of each of the United States, Plans of Cities&c. otherwise known as"Mitchell's Universal Atlas" Published by Thomas Coperthwaite& Co. Philadelphia, 1851. Many of the Maps included here are copyright in the 1830's and 1840's and identical to those found in the 1st Edition of this very important American Hand Colored Atlas. This important American Atlas measures approx. 14" x 17 3/4" and contains 73 hand colored sheets"forming a series of One Hundred and Twenty-Two Maps. Plans and Sections. The atlas includes an engraved title page with large vignette, letterpress table of contents, hand-colored ... morefrontispiece of the heights of the principal mountains and lengths of the principal rivers, 73 hand-colored lithographed maps, charts and city plans. It is bound in its' original publisher's 1/2 leather(red morocco) and marbled paper-covered boards with a red morocco title label that is elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt on front cover. Although published by Coperthwaite, the Atlas retains the original title of"Mitchell's Universal Atlas" on the red morocco label affixed to the front cover. Despite its title. The Atlas concentrates to a marked degree on the American continent with 34 maps of the American Interest, including a fine, double page map of the United States with an inset Map of the"Gold Regions" of California. Two old Iowa Maps. The Most valuable is the 1867 George F. Cram Iowa Map. Unfortunately it has little tiny holes. A few rips and numerous tape staining. The writing is in pencil however as it has the date written on front. The 1889 is better but has 1889 in pen marks. This was put out by Butlers complete geography and was engraved by W.H. Holmes. This is a very nice set of copper plate maps"Map of the Eastern& Western Hemispheres" by Augustus Mitchell. Produced in 1871. They are from"Mitchells New Intermediate Geography" System of Modern Geography published by E.H. Butler according to Act of Congress Measures 8.75 x 12 inches and is in good shape. The Western Hemisphere map has a small insert at the bottom, The Arctic Zone, on a Polar Projection. The Eastern Hemisphere map has the insert of the Antarctic zone on a polar projection. Plans of Cities, etc. embraced in 50 Quarto Maps, forming a series of Eighty Maps and Plans, together with valuable statistical tables. Published by S. The pages are not numbered consecutively, but I checked them with the list of maps, and none of the maps are missing. Most pages are affixed to the spine, but several are loose. Up for auction is an original. Antique atlas, published in 1871: Mitchell's New General Atlas Containing Maps of the Various Countries of the World. Plans of Cities. Etc. Embraced in Sixty-three Quarto Maps. Forming a series of One Hundred Maps and Plans Together With Valuable Statistical Tables. This atlas was published by Augustus Mitchell. Out of Philadelphia, in 1871. The atlas is bound in the original 1/2 leather over blind embossed cloth boards with gilt titling to the front board. There is rubbing to the board extremities. Wearing through the cloth in a few places, as expected for an atlas of this age. Binding and hinges are still tight and solid. There is a previous owner's pencil inscription on the title page, dated 1924; and another brief pencil inscription on the front free endpaper, dated 1940. The atlas is further housed ... morein a custom clamshell case. This atlas contains numerous single and double page maps of the various states of the United States. Major cities, and other countries. Each map is clean and bright with orignal hand coloring throughout. There are a few double page maps(Boston and New York state, most noticably) with minor clean splits along the center folds where they are tipped into the atlas. Offered for sale is this lot of 2 antique MITCHELL ATLAS Street Maps of Philadelphia circa 1880's in good overall condition. The large one measures about 23" by 15" and the smaller one measures about 17" by 14" The larger one has a date but the last number in the year did not print out on the map so all you see is 188? The smaller one is not dated but I have the hardcovers to the Mitchell's Universal Atlas that it came from and was told by an auctioneer that it was an 1882 atlas. I purchased these at an auction in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The smaller map has worn edges and small tears while the larger one has better edges but a small tear or separation in the bottom of the center seam as I tried to show in the one photo. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. Original 1871 MITCHELL School Atlas 44 Hand Colored United States& World Maps Original antique 1871 school atlas. Printed just six years after the Civil War, more than 143 years ago. This book is titled Mitchell's Modern Atlas. It was published in Philadelphia by E.H. Butler& Company. In 1871 and is dated on the title page. It has 44 copperplate maps"drawn and engraved expressly to illustrate Mitchell's New School Geography. There are also geographical tables and"an extensive pronouncing vocabulary of nearly ten thousand names. The book measures 11-3/4" x 9-1/2" and has hardboard covers. Condition: Both front and rear covers are detached. And the spine is missing. The front cover has darkened and has three areas where the paper has come off. The corners are worn and rounded, and there is edge wear to the ... moreboards at front and back. The interior pages have occasional marks, tears, and light soil. All of the maps called for in the table of contents are present and intact. The scans below show the title page and some of the maps: Most of the mid-19th century school atlases we have seen were evidently put to some pretty hard use. And this is a good example. With the front and rear endpapers embellished with pencil inscriptions from the young scholars who used the book many years ago.
