Islamic Brass Kashkul Beggars Bowl Near/Middle East
This kashkul. Of thin sheet brass, is in the most usual form for such items, i.e. half of a coco de mer shell. On each side is engraved a camel and two birds among flowering bushes, with the background having multiple piercings"a jour" which add to the fragility of the object. Rim in the form of small upstanding petals seems to show a few traces of original gilding. There is also damage to the rim, i.e. some half-dozen cracks reaching into the top of the decoration. Holes to each end for chains, which have not survived. Pleasant brownish patina. From somewhere in the Islamic Near/ Middle East. Some 10.5cm. high at middle of mouth, mouth 7cm. back to front, bowl 20cm. long overall Later 19th to early 20th century? This of course is impossible as an AH date. So presumably the craftsman was expressing a Western(AD) date. The present map comes out of Mercator's atlas'Tabulae Geographicae' which he compiled after the records of the antique geographer Ptolemy. The atlas was first published in 1578 but saw some more editions up into the 18th century. Being the last published edition of Ptolemy and without question the most heavily researched and studied of all editions by its maker. Ptolemy had originally drawn on the accounts of travelers and sailors and though the information was secondhand and often inaccurate it represented the most advanced account of the world's geography at that time. In the case of Arabia, Ptolemy overestimated both the width of the southern part of Arabia and the size and shape of the Persian Gulf. Arabia Petrea and Arabia Deserte are both placed in the north and Arabia Foelix is the term applied to the whole peninsula, rather than to the southern portions of it. He is best known for editing an edition of Claudius Ptolemy's'Geographia' in 1596. Islamic Copper Bowl Tall Foot Ottoman? Near/Middle East
This is a copper bowl on a tall integral foot. Around the bowl are engraved under ogee arches some six scenes with human figures doing various things which I cannot comprehend. Bearded busts. Also under arches, below. On the tall foot, roundels where flowers and drinkers alternate. Floral scrolls separate all these various scenes. A fascinating thing, which I suspect is from somewhere within the late lamented Ottoman Empire. Probably late 19th to early 20th century. 31cm. high, 21cm. across mouth. What a unique find! This stunning piece is interpreted to be an oil pourer. Hallmarked as.900 or"coin" silver on both the body and neck. The piece features a smooth curved neck with a bird in flight at the top of the opening and 3 deeply intricate silver leaf attachments, each with a bird in flight. This piece is unscrewed to fill the body. The body appears to be hand hammered with vertical lines from the top to the middle and horizontal lines and beading around the lower body. Finally, the foot resembles a"propeller" with each"blade" a curled leaf. The piece is in good to very good condition with no dents or deep scratches, although it needs a light polishing. Ornate Middle East Post 1946 Silver 900 Coffee Pitcher Pot With Box
This beautifully crafted coffee pot was created in the Middle East. Probably in Egypt sometime after 1946. This elegant piece stands 11 1/2" tall with a 4" base and weighs a whopping 631 grams. The body and lid are chased with a highly detailed pattern of scrolls and foliage. The handle is beaded down the middle and has well shaped gripping area. The spout is smooth and comes to a sharp point. The attached lid has 3 hallmarks, 900, the lotus, and one other that we cannot interpret. The same markings are stamped into the base. The piece is in good, used, unpolished condition with a bit of discoloration on the hinge of the lid which has been photographed. There is a lovely rich blue velvet box, which is also in good condition, and included in the sale. A nice addition to a Middle Eastern style serving set.
