The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, etc.are all rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. In near VG. Mostly clean condition. Map displays some light soiling to edges and a few short edge tears, which have been repaired with archival tape, centerfold split along bottom, although this can be easily repaired. It has 167 pages filled with all the vital information of the battle. It has all the generals pictured in addition to the landmarks. Terrain and structures of the area. It has a folded up map in the front depicting the highlights of the battle. This map and the entire book is in excellent condition with no marks, tears or creases. The map looks as if it has never been unfolded. On the back is text of Lincoln's Gettysburg Speech in it's entirety. This is a great book to have for a Civil War history buff. John B. Bachelder was by far the most important. Bachelder was the leading historian of the battle until his death. He arrived on the field soon after the battle and spent the rest of his life talking to veterans of both armies. Collecting their stories, reading and interpreting battle reports, and organizing reunions so monuments could be placed in accurate positions and he could gather even more information. In 1876. Bachelder, using the Warren Survey Map of the battlefield, published a three-map set depicting changing positions of every regiment and battery ... moreof both armies. However, this set was cluttered with too many troop positions and excluded the cavalry field. In 1880. Bachelder contracted with the War Department to write a history of the battle. The finished product, delivered in 1886, totalled more than 2,500 pages and was accompanied by tactical maps of the battle. These maps used the Warren map as a base and provided a clear representation of troop positions during the battle. For the first time ever. Bachelder’s maps have been published. The War Department never printed Bachelder’s history of the battle, and both the manuscript and the maps have languished, unseen by those interested in Gettysburg, for more than a hundred years. Now everyone intrested in Gettysburg will have access to these invaluable maps, the product of almost twenty years of painstaking research, by the foremost authority on the battle. With his army in high spirits, Lee intended to shift the focus of the summer campaign from war-ravaged northern Virginia and hoped to influence Northern politicians to give up their prosecution of the war by penetrating as far as Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, or even Philadelphia. Prodded by President Abraham Lincoln, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker moved his army in pursuit, but was relieved just three days before the battle and replaced by Meade. Elements of the two armies initially collided at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, as Lee urgently concentrated his forces there, his objective being to engage the Union army and destroy it. Low ridges to the northwest of town were defended initially by a Union cavalry division under Brig. Gen. John Buford, and soon reinforced with two corps of Union infantry. However, two large Confederate corps assaulted them from the northwest and north, collapsing the hastily developed Union lines, sending the defenders retreating through the streets of town to the hills just to the south.
