RARE Ohia Wood Hawaiian Canoe Paddle from Big Island Hawaii It is uncommon and a rarity to see Ohia Lehua(Metrosideros polymorpha) wood being used in Hawaiian woodworking. This highly prized wood is probably not common because it is not widespread to all the islands. With most of the Ohia forests being on the Big Island, where this paddle comes from. The red honey color and interesting grain make this paddle very beautiful and interesting. About Ohia Lehua( Wikipedia) The ʻōhiʻa lehua(Metrosideros polymorpha) is a species of flowering evergreen tree in the myrtle family. Myrtaceae, that is endemic to the six largest islands of Hawaiʻi. It is a highly variable tree, being 20–25 m(66–82 ft) tall in favorable situations, and much smaller when growing in boggy soils or on basalt. It produces a brilliant display of flowers, made up of a mass of ... morestamens, which can range from fiery red to yellow. Many native Hawaiian traditions refer to the tree and the forests it forms as sacred to Pele, the volcano goddess, and to Laka, the goddess of hula. The reddish brown heartwood of M. polymorpha is very hard. Fine textured, and has a specific gravity of 0.7. In native Hawaiian society, it was used in house and heiau construction, as well as to make papa kuʻi ʻai(poi boards) weapons, tool handles, hohoa(round kapa beaters) and kiʻi(statues and idols) Although the trunk of ʻōhiʻa was not used to make thekaʻele(hull) of waʻa(outrigger canoes) it was used for their nohona waʻa(seats) pale(gunwales) and pola(decking) Wae(spreaders) were made from the curved stilt roots of ʻōhiʻa. Pā(fencing) was made from the wood due to its availability;kauila(Colubrina oppositifolia or Alphitonia ponderosa) more durable woods when in contact with soil, was rarer. As the wood burned hot and cleanly, it was excellent wahie(firewood) The lehua(flowers) and liko lehua(leaf buds) were used in making lei. The poster is marked in the lower right corner teri photo Island style po 418 with hawaiian address The poster color is good but oster was hung by the corners with tacks at some point and has wear and small tears on the corners. The image has some creasing and there are a couple water marks toward the top right side shown in the second photo. Vintage late 50's- early 60's. This is a sign and not a paper poster. The person I got it from said he originally purchased it from a lady who had owned a travel agency. The art work was created by Dessiaume for the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau and used on posters. Magazine ads, etc during the late 1950's. This sign made of a material that I can best describe as a countertop type laminate about 2 millimeters thick. It is 31 inches wide and 20 1/2 inches tall. The lower left corner is broken off and there is chip on the top center. The image is in excellent condition with vibrant colors.
