Fine. Original, steel-engraved plan of Amsterdam, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. The idea for the town plans, of which the SDUK published many dozens, was that of W. B. Clarke, an architect, who became an enthusiastic advocate for the plans, and who executed most of them ... morehimself, often on the basis of personal on-site observations. Up for your consideration is a beautiful quality Antique Map of Pomerania. The map was done in the 1630's by Johannes Janssonius a cartographer and publisher born in 1588. His father was a publisher and bookseller. He married the daughter opf a cartograpgher and puiblisher and set up a business in Amsterdam as a book publisher. He published his first maps in 1616 and contiued publishing a large amount of maps. From 1630 to 1638 he was in partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius. The map shows Pomnerania and the island of Rugen. There are 4 nicely hand colored cartouches and a heraldic cartouche. The map shows ships sailing in the ocean with a sea serpent close to the center of the map. One of the cartouches shows the king of Popmerania Bugislav Ivnior XIV. There is also a Coat of Arms. In another cartouche it reads Nortarum ... moreExplicatio Urbes. Urbes cum arcibus, Ducalibus, Pagi. The bottom right hand corner reads Nova Illustraissimi Ducatus Pomeraniae Tabula, antea a Viro cl.d.d. Eilhardo Lubino edita, nune iterum correcta per Frid.Palbitzke, Pomer. L.L. Studiosum. The bottom left cartouche shows the distances on the map, and reads Amstelodami, Apud Ioannem IanBonium. The map is very detailed and shows castles, forests,cities, lakes and rivers. I believe the Baltic Sea surrounds the land. The map seems to be in good condition with some discoloration here and there and a small tear in the upper left hand corner. The frame looks like an older one with wood nails and I believe is maple. The paper on the back of the picture looks newer and was replaced at some point. The map has writing on the back that you can see thru the paper. This must have come out of a book because there is a crease down the middle of the map. This vintage map print depicts the European city of Amsterdam as it was circa 1905. This would make an amazing framed piece of art as part of your home decor. A great gift for someone from Amsterdam or who has spent a lot of time there. Perhaps studying abroad. Condition is very good. I removed this from the book using an exacto knife. A very successful New York City tax lawyer traveled widely in the 1930's to the 50's. He left much travel memorabilia which I came to own from his daughter's estate. This is like a look back in time.
