Very Old Frafra Bronze Anklet Chevillière African Currency Amulet A very old Gurunsi or sub-group of the Gurunsi bronze bronze anklet or chevillière. Traditional chevillières are worn by women but it is also thought by some scholars that men may also wear them. Especially the larger and heavier anklets. Created using the lost wax method that involves creating a model in beeswax. Once completed. Wax rods are attached to it and the entire model is encased in layers of fine clay. The structure is heated and the melted wax runs out through the channels of wax rods; molten metal is poured into the mold- the mold is broken and the piece has been created, resulting in a unique and original piece. Antique currency belt or necklace from Burkina Faso (2)
I believe this to be a Currency belt or necklace. It was was picked up by my father in Burkina Faso in the 1960's. I could not find any other information on its origins. It has many brass links on a rope. Each link seems to have been individually cast and as result each has its own character. Its a pretty necklace, with what seems to be a lot of history. Its length. When measured as seen in picture is 32 cm, The links are each around 1 cm thick, but that varies.
