The silver is lightly gilt and the whole outside is covered with fine silver wire work filled in with colorful opaque enamel. This is a lovely little cloissone dish or bowl. The underside is marked with the Russian silver purity mark of 88 out of 96 parts to denote.916 purity silver. A date and city mark for 1891 and Moscow and a makers mark for the Ovchinnikov firm(Pavel Ovchinnikov) This piece is in pretty good overall condition. There is some minor loss of enamel. But it is mostly noticeable only when you inspect the piece up close. We have photographed the piece in the round so you can see all of the minor losses. Cup is hallmarked on the ... moreside and bottom with the royal warrant mark and the maker’s AK hallmark. The side hallmark also includes the 88 zolotnick mark for a silver purity assay of 91.7% pure silver. Cup is in fantastic condition for its age with no dings. Dents, bends, breaks, or cracks to the highly hand engraved gilt silver. The glass portions have only tiny cracks or chips on a couple of small red panes. Which may very well have been original to the piece, as one small red pane has a crack which follows the seam of the cup, and another shows chipping but no damage to the surrounding metal. They are both shown in picture close-ups. They are not loose nor do they leak. Some of the other pieces of glass have tiny bubbles or wispy inclusions. They are not very noticeable without a jeweler’s loop. The gilt on the top of the bottom base looks to be wearing slightly in spots. Other than these small issues the cup is in fantastic shape and has a beautiful array of rainbow colors. Yellows. Greens, blues, reds, and purples, they all let the light shine through. When held to the light and tipped up. It is like drinking from a stained glass window with the Star of David at the center. The cup measures about 3 ¼ inches tall by about 2 1/8 inches wide. And weighs about 124 grams. The Star of David is stealthy hidden on the bottom and unseen when filled with a semi opaque liquid like wine. Judaism was much oppressed in Russia at the time this cup was made. And especially so in Moscow where only useful Jews, according to the rulers of the time, were allowed to live. A cup like this would have been used to remember and cherish the Jewish tradition while hiding in plain sight of possible nosey visitors. This is a beautifully made piece of antique Russian Judaica. Up for bid is an outstanding pair of early Russian cloisonné enamel gilt silver sugar tongs. They likely date to the late 19 th century. They measure approximately 4 ½ inches long by 1 inch wide. They are stamped HA and 88 on the underside of the top. With HA indicating the maker and 88 indicating the quality of the silver. There is also a hallmark engraved on the top, likely a family name. The enamel work is a gorgeous combination of white, dark blue, red, green and light turquoise colored pieces that form several flower shapes on the sides. The majority of the enamel is intact and in very good condition, but there is one spot on the top where several tiny pieces of enamel have worn. This set has a total weight of 121.9 grams. And each spoon measures 5 3/4" long by 1 1/8" wide at the bowl. The marks on this set were used from 1958 to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, and the spoons carry the purity mark for 916/1000 fine. The front handles are decorated with a stylized white flower and ice blue leaves set against a deep blue background. This design was created using the cloisonne enameling technique. In this technique the design is outlined with silver wire, and then each cell formed in the outline is filled with wet enamel and kiln fired.
