Here for your consideration is a Fine Antique Russian 84 Silver Orthodox Bishop's Porringer in Excellent preserved condition. It measures 7.2 cm. 2 7/8" inches) across the top of the bowl and 12.2 cm. 4 3/4" inches) across the top of the bowl with the handle. It measures 3.7 cm. 1 1/2" inches) tall. It has an overall weight of 80.8 grams. The handle is made in the shape of Russian church royal crown. The Porringer has NOT dings/dents or other damages. It's gold plated inside. Comes from the Russian whiteguard family emigrated here in 1921. Unfortunately. There is no other reliable information about the origin and purpose of it. Obviously it is ecclesiastical porringer, which(perhaps) was used to give communion, christening or similar religious Orthodox services. I can't imagine the story this bowl has! Topped by a bearded head enclosed by a halo with cyrillic writing below, and both images surrounded by small religious half-figures in squares, most of whom hold some object, all nailed onto a 5/8" thick piece of wood. Silver work is complicated and detailed. The icon is marked 84 with the town mark in the cartouche that was used in the period of 1882-1899. Beginning in the mid of 19th century a standard silver mark 84 and a town mark was punched close beside each other, often look like a single mark. There is also the maker's mark in Cyrillic letters: CK3"The icon was made in Moscow as it is stamped with the town mark depicting St. George slaying the Dragon that was in use in the second half of the 19th century. The silver Oklad has some oxidation but could be cleaned. There is no damage to the face of the icon but the back of it has some slightly burned part of wood(look at the pictures) and the velvet fabric was damaged by the fire and faded due to the age. Two Saints A wonderful old Russian icon painting with matching solid silver riza. The symmetrical composition depicts two saints(Zosim and Sovati? in front of a church. Beautifully painted in great detail. The painting includes writing in Russian, perhaps the artist's name or an inscription relating to the piece. The silver riza overlays the painting with an identical image and cutwork that shows the saints' heads and hands. The finely detailed repousse on the silver includes lettering, geometric borders and 3-dimensional gilt haloes. The silver is hallmarked"1882, 84, M И" with additional assay and country marks. Amazing craftsmanship. All around. The icon has been split in two and the angel(center top) further damaged with a hole. It's held together lightly with archival paper tape.
