Antique Lacquer Wood Tray w Chinese Watercolor Court Painting Paper w Gold Foil
I purchased this tray with its painting at an estate sale where there were quite a few other vintage and antique items. Other than that. I do not know its history. I would guess that the painting and the frame are from the 19th century. I think that the painting might be older than the frame. I leave it to the buyer to determine exactly how old it is. I'm sure that the painting is from China. I think that the tray is probably from China but I do not know enough to say with certainty that it is. The left side of the painting looks like some kind of court scene to me. I do not know if it is the Imperial Court or not. I think it interesting that the warrior on the right is holding a baby. I would guess that the painting is describing an important birth. Not measuring the handles. The tray measures close to 19 ¼ by 13 ¼ inches. ... moreIt weighs close to 3 pounds 5.8 ounces. I have not examined the painting out of the tray. I went as far as removing the black cardboard back of the tray but decided that it was unwise to disassemble it further. Beneath the black cardboard, I found a grayish cardboard held in place by nails. Some of the nails are pretty rusted while others are not. I think that some if not all of the nails have been replaced at some time. A few nails are missing. The border appears to be partially made of a thin gold colored foil. I think that it is probably real gold but I do not know that for a fact. The gray color behind the characters in the border has a metallic shine to it when I angle it to a light. I think that it might be some kind of metal like tin. I do not know what kind of wood the frame was made from. I think that it is some kind of hardwood. The original watercolor painting appears to be on some kind of paper that I have not identified. The painting is behind glass. So. Please be aware that there are some reflections in my photos. Antique Chinese watercolor on rice/pith paper. The frame is in the shape of a Chinese building. The frame appears to have been covered in velvet material. Which is worn and tattered. The matting is a satin frame. The picture is in good condition except for a tiny bit of discoloration, which I believe is on the picture and not just under the glass. It is hard to tell without taking the picture frame apart. There is also a small tear on the painting. A set of 6 antique Chinese pith paintings depicting birds in China. 1850 A.D. Qing Dynasty, China. Framed. Frame size: 29.7 x 21.6 cm. Condition: Good for its age. As seen in the photos. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera. Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses. Some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore colored flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children and in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting. It is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom. If ever, measure ... moremore than about 30 cms by 20 cms. The sheets are dried. Trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith(often erroneously called“rice paper” or“mulberry pith” come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s.
