There is a small red table decorated with vases in the background. The figures are well defined and stand out crisply from the unadorned background. This piece is probably from the 19th century, but may be early 20th century. The painting has been displayed in a simple wooden frame. Overall. This piece is in fair to good condition, but has not been examined outside of the frame. This is a pair of antique(I believe. Though there is no date) pith paintings that show two males dressed in blue. The paintings are 9.5cm x 14cm(the frames are 25cm x 30cm) Both do. However, show signs of damage: 1(man with sticks) has some vertical splits. Some sections of missing paper by his left foot, a brown spot behind his body and a fainter one above his head(where there's also a tiny hole) a blue smudge around his left knee on the background, a missing bit of paper by his right hand, a few small indents to the background, some black speckling to the inner brass border of the frame 2- brown spots at top of head and in the background's top left. Wonderful Original Antique c1850 Chinese Pith Painting The sheet measures 12 inches by 8. There is no frame. I got it under glass at a Estate auction. It was written that it came from the Cantonese school.There are a few cracks and holes to the rice paper as shown however they are outside the image area for the most part and a nice frame should cover. Pith came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for inexpensive and easily transported art, mainly souvenir grade, following the massive growth in the China ... moretrade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. The use of the media peaked in the late 1830s to early 1850s but was still being done as late as the late 1900s. The form realistically dates to not much earlier than the 1820s in most cases. While not classified"fine art" in the vast majority of cases. The works such as yours will command from a wholesale value of around $350 to a high retail of up to about $1,250 in most markets in the condition it appears to be-these paintings are very subjective to light degradation, so yours must have been kept in a very low light environment to remain that vivid for so long.

I have been informed this probably dates from the early 19th century and is particularly good quality. I think the flowers depicted are Camellia. CONDITION: The edge of the picture has some losses to the bottom right corner and the left hand middle side. There are a few light creases across the image but the colours are still vibrant. There is a small rust stain(3mm) just below the opening flower(see photo 8) The frame it is in is 19th century and quite tatty and I am happy to post without this if you would prefer. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small. Inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. The first frame contains two paintings of children, one reading and the other playing with a wheeled pull along toy. The second frame contains two paintings of women, one with an umbrella and the other sitting holding a sprig of flowers, The third frame has two painting, one of two figures before a table and the other a figure watching a goldfish in a large fish bowl. The three frames are of a textured surface of green and white and are in good condition. I have tried to show the paintings without glass reflections of the camera and tripod. The condition is excellent with good unfaded colours but one painting has a slight tear to the top left corner, see detail photograph of the woman ... morewith the umbrella. 19th century Antique Chinese Pith Painting - Women in Court Scene 1830s
This is a fantastic painting of women in a court setting. You can see the tiny feet of the two women on the right. The detail of the garments and furniture is exquisite. Measures 19 3/4" by 14 1/4" The area within the mat measures about 7 1/2" by 13" I am putting up another painting of men and a horse. On the back is the receipt from 1968 when these two were purchased. It states that they are circa 1830. Discounted shipping in the continental US is $12.00.
