Thirteen Export Paintings. China. 19th century, gouache on pith paper, A rare set still bound in original half calf binding Pith Paintings in China In the early 19thCentury Chinese artists adopted this miniature technique. Painted in watercolor and gouache. Chinese pith paintings were created exclusively for the export market. These miniature paintings were much easier to transport than their full size counterparts. They were first brought back to the West by diplomats as presents and souvenirs. Pith paper. Also erroneously referred to as‘rice paper’ comes from the inner pith of Tetrapanax papyriferus, a South Asian plant. The pith found on the inside of the plant, is removed by pushing a circular dowel through the branches. It is then stripped into thin slices using a very sharp knife Due to the nature of the material. Sheets of pith paper ... moreare not large, generally around 5 inches x 3 inches. Thus larger works claiming to be on pith are generally erroneously attributed. The finished product is a soft sponge-like piece of paper with a velvet surface texture. It is perfect for the production of miniature paintings created using watercolors and gouache. Materials that when applied to the pith seem to float on the surface while allowing the unique texture of the paper to shine through. The use of this spongy paper-like substance, which is soft, velvety and translucent, combined with gouache gave the paintings especially vibrant color and a unique dimensionality. Unfortunately these unique qualities also make Pith paper a very fragile material and its surface can easily be bruised and broken. Thus condition issues are common. Restoration and conservation of these gems are done frequently by Museums and collectors. Boxed sets of albums showed every aspect of Chinese life from birth to death. Each album containing between four to the paintings bound between various covers. These full sets sometimes come to light, but most have now been split up and framed individually. An antique album with 3 export Chinese pith paintings depicting Chinese merchants unfortunate destiny as an opium smoker. Unsigned. Watercolour on pith. Original patterned silk bound album with SUNQUA's label enclosed. The paintings. Before removed, were originally held on top of papper pages by using blue ribbons glued to the paper and the pith paintings were held behind the ribbons. SUNQUA was active in the period between 1830-1870 A.D. Sheet size 19 x 32 cm. Condition: as seen in the photos. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera. Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children ... moreand in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30 cms by 20 cms. The sheets are dried. Trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith(often erroneously called“rice paper” or“mulberry pith” come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. A set of 7 antique Chinese pith paintings depicting Royal processions 1850 A.D. Qing Dynasty, China. Dimensions: 30.5 x 18.5 cm All are framed. Condition: very good. Some are damaged as seen in the photos. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera. Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses. Some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore colored flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children and in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting. It is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting ... moreseldom. If ever, measure more than about 30 cms by 20 cms. The sheets are dried. Antique Chinese watercolor on rice/pith paper. The frame is in the shape of a Chinese building. The frame appears to have been covered in velvet material. Which is worn and tattered. The matting is a satin frame. The picture is in good condition except for a tiny bit of discoloration, which I believe is on the picture and not just under the glass. It is hard to tell without taking the picture frame apart. There is also a small tear on the painting.
