The lady on the left has some minor paint chipping to her face. Very neat look into the life of a cast of interesting characters. The work doesn’t appear to be signed. Fine antique Chinese painting(probably gouache) on pith paper. Likely made for export. This detailed piece shows two women, one holding a book and the other perhaps tutoring her. There is a small red table decorated with vases in the background. The figures are well defined and stand out crisply from the unadorned background. This piece is probably from the 19th century, but may be early 20th century. The painting has been displayed in a simple wooden frame. Overall. This piece is in fair to good condition, but has not been examined outside of the frame. As you can see from the pictures, there is either a large crease or tear through the center of the piece, but it does not touch the painted areas. Antique Chinese Export Painting on Pith (Rice) Paper Male Dignitary
This is an absolutely exquisite painting of a young man probably of noble birth. His garments are painted in great detail. I have compared the artistry of this painter to some of the paintings that have been offered by other sellers on this site and you can see how superior the skill is in this rendering. There is also a lovely piece of furniture and furnishings. Look closely at the 4th picture and you will see the slight staining and the small crack in the pith paper. The painting measures 6 1/4" by 10 5/8" The frame measures 9 3/4" by 14" The frame was covered with a foil paper sometime in the mid 20th century which was removed recently. Chinese Export painting, pith painting, butterfly and flowers, framed
A framed Chinese Export Painting on pith paper. From around 1850-1900 with a butterfly and flowers. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small, inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. This requires great skill and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30cms by 20cms. The sheets are dried, trimmed and used for ... morepainting. Because of the nature of pith and its cellular structure, the gouache used by the Chinese sat on the surface and produced a bright and even sparkling effect.
