Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses. Some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore colored flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children and in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting. It is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom. If ever, measure more than about 30 cms by 20 cms. The sheets are dried. Trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith(often erroneously called“rice paper” or“mulberry pith” come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. The rice paper paintings have been secured on a white paper background using string on the corners. Which can be removed easily. Gogeous Antique Chinese Pith/Rice Paper Painting, Noble Man & Woman
Here on offer is a wonderful antique Chinese pith or rice paper painting illustrating two nobles a man and woman at court. In an antique silver frame. The painting has some fantastic detailing and the colours are still strong and crisp. It illustrates a beautiful woman who is fanning a nableman who is seated in front of a three-part screen. The painting has a wonderful sense of movement. The painting is framed in a silver frame. That I think is possibly by Garrard& Co, most of the hallmarks are missing due to damage to the silver. The silver is embossed with a classic foliate design in shallow relief and is pinned to the body of the free standing frame, the wooden body is covered with blue silk velvet. TWO Antique 19thc. Chinese Pith Paintings Figures in Traditional Dress in Frames Description Two delicate antique Chinese paintings of men in traditional dress. I believe they are done on pith paper. One is not secure in its frame and I can see that the paper is very delicate and fragile. The paintings are very finely detailed and the colors are vibrant(especially the green one) The frames are not identical. But the paintings are by likely by the same hand so I am selling them as I found them ~ as a pair. They both are under glass and matted. The visible area of each painting is about 10 1/8"H x 3 7/8"W. The frames are very slightly different in size. The one with the gentlemen in green costume is about 14 1/2"H x 7 1/2"W. The one with the gentlemen in blue costume is about 14 1/4"H x 7 1/4"W. CONDITION: Antique ... morefragile item. One(the men in blue) is not securely in its frame and needs to be reinforced before hanging. The secure one(the men in green) has not been examined out of the frame. With the unsecured one. I can see that the paper is very fragile(which is the reason I do not want to start taking is apart to examine it) I would assume that there is some damage along the fragile edges. The matte on the unsecured one has some dirt near the bottom. In both cases, it is likely that the mattes have yellow a bit over the years. These are older frames. It appears that these paintings have been in these frames for a long time. Both have glass which appear to be in good condition. The edges of the frames have wear in a few areas. Nothing serious. Fine antique Chinese painting(probably gouache) on pith paper. Likely made for export. This detailed piece shows two women, one holding a book and the other perhaps tutoring her. There is a small red table decorated with vases in the background. The figures are well defined and stand out crisply from the unadorned background. This piece is probably from the 19th century, but may be early 20th century. The painting has been displayed in a simple wooden frame. Overall. This piece is in fair to good condition, but has not been examined outside of the frame. This is an absolutely exquisite painting of a young man probably of noble birth. His garments are painted in great detail. I have compared the artistry of this painter to some of the paintings that have been offered by other sellers on this site and you can see how superior the skill is in this rendering. There is also a lovely piece of furniture and furnishings. Look closely at the 4th picture and you will see the slight staining and the small crack in the pith paper. The painting measures 6 1/4" by 10 5/8" The frame measures 9 3/4" by 14" The frame was covered with a foil paper sometime in the mid 20th century which was removed recently. This is what appears to be a lovely gold framed Chinese vibrant watercolor on rice paper? or pith paper? Depicting children musicians playing musical instruments& giving a real feel of enjoyment.Please study the photos closely as they are all part of the description.The paper is wrinkled throughout.There is a small tear in the green to the far right.The male laid has a tear running vertical through his ankle.The whole painting is painted on two pieces of paper running horizontal with each other.In places the pieces have parted slightly.There is a couple of damp marks around the border but not on the painting.Some tiny dark flecks of dust under the glass.Approx frame size 15" x 8.5"Approx picture size 13.4 x 6.6" I have no idea of it's age but as you can see from the back it has been framed for many year's.At a guess ... morelate 1800's early 1900's.The gold frame is painted wood& has scrub marks in various places.The back is wooden held in place with rusty nails.It looks like Biro lines drawn on the wood.My only knowledge is from the internet so I have done my best with the description so you are buying from my description& photos.Thanks for looking. FANTASTIC. ORIGINAL CIRCA 1850 ALBUM OF HAND-PAINTED WATERCOLOR IMAGES DEPICTING TORTURE& PUNISHMENT& EXECUTIONS. Paintings within this amazing bound volume were beautifully hand-rendered in gouache[aka opaque watercolor or bodycolor] on rice[aka pith] paper. Circa mid-19th century. Album is one of those rare gems produced during the Qing Dynasty which should be seen to be fully appreciated. Bound collection of nine individual paintings depicts a variety of Chinese punishments. Some rather cruel and shocking. Each image is accompanied by a small clipping of printed text, probably obtained from another source and pasted along the bottom margin, which describes the punishment being depicted. These include"Arrest of criminals" Punishment of criminal by parading him in the Street" Slapping the mouth for telling lies" ... morePunishment by stretching the criminal on a wooden bench" Torture by pressing the ankles of criminal with wooden poles" Bambooing his breeches" Banishment" Ling Ch'ee(i.e. cutting off the flesh of the criminal piece by piece) and"Beheading- the Capital punishment in China" All figures depicted in images appear to be dressed in traditional Chinese garments, with colors remaining bright and crisp in these strikingly detailed images. Each painting measures about 8.5" x 11.5" and all are bordered by contrasting light-blue ribbon. The Qing Dynasty was the last dynasty of China. Ruling from 1644 to 1912 with a brief, abortive restoration in 1917. It was preceded by the Ming Dynasty and followed by the Republic of China. The dynasty was founded by the Jurchen Aisin Gioro clan in contemporary Northeastern China. The Aisin Gioro leader, Nurhachi, who was originally a vassal of the Ming emperors, began unifying the Jurchen clans in the late 16th century. A late 18th/early 19th century Chinese gouache painting on pith paper. In excellent condition for its age. Green mount. Glazed and framed. Picture measures 33cm x 20cm and the overall frame 50cm x 39cm. ===================================. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera. Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children and in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that ... morethe finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30cms by 20cms.
