Condition: Good ... morefor its age. As seen in the photos. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera. Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses. Some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore colored flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children and in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting. It is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom. If ever, measure more than about 30 cms by 20 cms. The sheets are dried. Trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith(often erroneously called“rice paper” or“mulberry pith” come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Gogeous Antique Chinese Pith/Rice Paper Painting, Noble Man & Woman
Here on offer is a wonderful antique Chinese pith or rice paper painting illustrating two nobles a man and woman at court. In an antique silver frame. The painting has some fantastic detailing and the colours are still strong and crisp. It illustrates a beautiful woman who is fanning a nableman who is seated in front of a three-part screen. The painting has a wonderful sense of movement. The painting is framed in a silver frame. That I think is possibly by Garrard& Co, most of the hallmarks are missing due to damage to the silver. The silver is embossed with a classic foliate design in shallow relief and is pinned to the body of the free standing frame, the wooden body is covered with blue silk velvet. The art work is in great condition, there in one small hole below the standing figure. As is so often the case, but it does nothing to ... moredetract from the aesthetic quality of the painting. The painting is offered in good antique condition. The frame measures about 17.3cm by 11.1cm and weighs 161g. A great collectable. Please see my pictures for the details of the condition. Fine antique Chinese painting(probably gouache) on pith paper. Likely made for export. This detailed piece shows two women, one holding a book and the other perhaps tutoring her. There is a small red table decorated with vases in the background. The figures are well defined and stand out crisply from the unadorned background. This piece is probably from the 19th century, but may be early 20th century. The painting has been displayed in a simple wooden frame. Overall. This piece is in fair to good condition, but has not been examined outside of the frame. As you can see from the pictures, there is either a large crease or tear through the center of the piece, but it does not touch the painted areas. Antique Chinese Export Painting on Pith (Rice) Paper Male Dignitary
This is an absolutely exquisite painting of a young man probably of noble birth. His garments are painted in great detail. I have compared the artistry of this painter to some of the paintings that have been offered by other sellers on this site and you can see how superior the skill is in this rendering. There is also a lovely piece of furniture and furnishings. Look closely at the 4th picture and you will see the slight staining and the small crack in the pith paper. The painting measures 6 1/4" by 10 5/8" The frame measures 9 3/4" by 14" The frame was covered with a foil paper sometime in the mid 20th century which was removed recently. This is what appears to be a lovely gold framed Chinese vibrant watercolor on rice paper? or pith paper? Depicting children musicians playing musical instruments& giving a real feel of enjoyment.Please study the photos closely as they are all part of the description.The paper is wrinkled throughout.There is a small tear in the green to the far right.The male laid has a tear running vertical through his ankle.The whole painting is painted on two pieces of paper running horizontal with each other.In places the pieces have parted slightly.There is a couple of damp marks around the border but not on the painting.Some tiny dark flecks of dust under the glass.Approx frame size 15" x 8.5"Approx picture size 13.4 x 6.6" I have no idea of it's age but as you can see from the back it has been framed for many year's.At a guess ... morelate 1800's early 1900's.The gold frame is painted wood& has scrub marks in various places.The back is wooden held in place with rusty nails.It looks like Biro lines drawn on the wood.My only knowledge is from the internet so I have done my best with the description so you are buying from my description& photos.Thanks for looking. ANTIQUE 18TH CENTURY CHINESE GOUACHE PAINTING ON PITH PAPER MOUNTED AND FRAMED
A late 18th/early 19th century Chinese gouache painting on pith paper. In excellent condition for its age. Green mount. Glazed and framed. Picture measures 33cm x 20cm and the overall frame 50cm x 39cm. ===================================. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera. Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children and in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that ... morethe finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30cms by 20cms. This is a pair of antique(I believe. Though there is no date) pith paintings that show two males dressed in blue. The paintings are 9.5cm x 14cm(the frames are 25cm x 30cm) Both do. However, show signs of damage: 1(man with sticks) has some vertical splits. Some sections of missing paper by his left foot, a brown spot behind his body and a fainter one above his head(where there's also a tiny hole) a blue smudge around his left knee on the background, a missing bit of paper by his right hand, a few small indents to the background, some black speckling to the inner brass border of the frame 2- brown spots at top of head and in the background's top left. It was written that it came from the Cantonese school.There are a few cracks and holes to the rice paper as shown however they are outside the image area for the most part and a nice frame should cover. It is not mint but the colors are very vivid! Please look at pictures carefully. I use an appraisal service for my fine antiques and below is what I received from them: Hello. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. The use of the media peaked in the late 1830s to early 1850s but was still being done as late as the late 1900s. The form realistically dates to not much earlier than the 1820s in most cases. While not classified"fine art" in the vast majority of cases. The works such as yours will command from a wholesale value of around $350 to a high retail of up to about $1,250 in most markets in the condition it appears to be-these paintings are very subjective to light degradation, so yours must have been kept in a very low light environment to remain that vivid for so long.

An antique album with 3 export Chinese pith paintings depicting Chinese merchants unfortunate destiny as an opium smoker. Unsigned. Watercolour on pith. Original patterned silk bound album with SUNQUA's label enclosed. The paintings. Before removed, were originally held on top of papper pages by using blue ribbons glued to the paper and the pith paintings were held behind the ribbons. SUNQUA was active in the period between 1830-1870 A.D. Sheet size 19 x 32 cm. Condition: as seen in the photos. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera. Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children ... moreand in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30 cms by 20 cms. The sheets are dried. Trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith(often erroneously called“rice paper” or“mulberry pith” come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in
