This traditional bell ringing wheel is certainly a rare find these days. With a groove on the outside. The rope would fit in this space for ringing.In fact while searching the internet for a similar item I can across two, both in England with very high price tags, selling for about $350.00 US dollars. This wheel came from a local church that will be torn down soon. The church stands on the same road that General Lee used to retreat from the Gettysburg Campaign. I've been told it is at least 150 years old. This piece measures approximately 52" in diameter and has layers of wood joined by nails. In very good condition I only notice one small wedge of wood missing. Please look at all photos carefully and use the close-up zoom for best look. Because of size this will be local pick-up only. Antique Brass School Church Bell from the Maryhurst Retreat House Pinehurst NC
Here is an antique solid brass school or church bell circa 1940‘s. This old wall mount bell was amount the hardware and fixtures which I retained after seller my old home in Pinehurst NC. The Maryhurst Retreat House, formally known as“Thistle Dhu” The house was build in 1919 and I believe the bell was mounted on the lower stairwell leading to the upstairs rooms sometime in the late 1940’s. At that time the house was occupied by the Daughters of Jesus and they provided weekend retreat for young Catholic girls. When I purchased the house in the early 1990’s from the Dioceses of Raleigh it was being used as a youth Sunday School and Parish Center by the local Catholic Church. I expect the bell was used in the earlier days to announce meal times to the retreat guests. In its later days it was probably used as a school bell to start and end Sunday ... moreschool classes. It’s surely a great bell with lots of Pinehurst history surrounding it. The bell’s weight is approximately 4 ½” The diameter of the bell is 5 ½” and it has a great ring tone. For other measurements please review the pictures provided. The bell has not been cleaned and still retains its original patina. There are a few paint spots on the brass bell and its brass mounting bracket. The mounting bracket can be affixed to the wall vertically or horizontally. I could not find any marker marks on either the bell or its mounting bracket. Need to find a new home for this 1975 Bing and Grondahl bell. About 5-1/2" tall. Blue ceramic with gold cameo picture of St. Peter's dome on each side. Bottom is marked RIng out the Old, Ring in the New. One photo show a white spot by this lettering, but that is just a reflection. Identification wording in gold around the inside.
