Mr. Ellacombe was a pilot during the Battle of Britain. 253 Squadron where he took part in the Dieppe Raid 1942 operations. He was later posted to 487 Squadron RNZAF, and during the build up to the Normandy Invasion and after, was involved in many ground attacks on enemy held airfields, railways, and other targets of opportunity. I have also included a photograph of the flower petal end on the needlecase. This same design is on both ends. The'black' that you see on the inside shaft is discoloration not damage. The delicate carving is pierced through to allow the navy velvet cushion to show through. T he bottom disc is plain. The carving is the especially fine variety from the Dieppe region of France. The bouquet on the front includes daisies and forget me nots and a carved stiletto holds it together when pushed through the loops at the right edge. The interior is lined with red silk(all original) and the spine and loops for the stiletto are leather. It has wool flannel needle"pages" to hold the needles. The Raid on Dieppe- Operation Jubilee RAF cover JS50 cover produced for the 50th Anniversary of The Raid on Dieppe codenamed Operation Jubilee which took place on 18/19th August 1942. Cover depicts the Essex Scottish under enfilade fire on the Dieppe main beach on 19th August 1942. Spitfire VBs attacking JU88s iver Pourville and the destroyers HMS Calpe and HMS Fernie attacking German positions in Dieppe. Cover bears 24p defin stamp cancelled with BFPS 2311 for the 50th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Cover has been flown in Aerospatial Tampico from Biggin Hill to Dieppe and then along the beaches at Dieppe where early in the morning of 19th August 1942 the massacre at Dieppe took place and then across the Channel retracing the route taken by the survivors during that afternoon and then onto Biggin Hill. In April 1942 planning began for a ... moreraid on a French Channel port with the intention of boosting morale at home and reassuring Britain's hard-pressed Russian and American Allies. The plan was codenamed Rutter and was developed as an attack by a force of 60000 largely Canadiam on a ten mile front of the French Coast centred on the port of Dieppe. Specialised training was pushed ahead in Scotland and on the Isle of Wight. The date chosen for Operation Rutter was July 7th 1942 but in the end bad weather caused it to be cancelled. By the end of the month the raid was revived under the codename Jubilee. This time it was to be a reconnaissance in force on a strongly defended sector of coast to discover what resistance would have to be met in the endeavour to seize a port. The forces were mainly Canadian most of whom had been inactive in England since 1940. Up for auction is a beautiful. Authentic french antique Dieppe carved crucifix. The Christ figure has been carfully carved from 3 pieces of precious material(body + 2 arms) The details of the carving are remarkable; the eyes and face of the figure are full of expression. The darkened or blackened wood frame suggests that this dates to the Napoleon III period. Condition is very good: the figure has a lovely patina due to its age. And amazingly, all of the delicately-carved fingers are still present. The micro pinky-toe of the left foot has been chipped as well as a thorn or two from the crown(very hard to see) The wood frame has a time-worn look, but is still in good shape. There is a marking at the foot of the cross indicating that it probably used to be inserted into some kind of base. The crucifix measures 10.5 inches tall. And all original- in excellent antique condition with some minor overall wear commensurate to it's age and original use. Highly collectible with a gorgeous warmth to the natural noble material. Estate find- unmarked, This case measures 107 x 76 mm- approximately 4 1/4" x 3 1/8" inches There are no cracks. Chips, breaks or repairs in the noble material hard portion of the case. Stunningly Beautiful Antique French Dieppe Natural Substance Thread Spool
For your consideration is this unbelievably beautiful natural substance finely carved thread spool. I purchased this in England as Georgian but I suspect it to be French Dieppe. This piece is the jewel in the crown of my antique sewing accoutrements. The wee spool measures a little over 1 inch square and is in pristine antique condition. The carving on the spool is utterly gorgeous. One side of the spool possesses a carved harvest basket complete with fruits and please note the amazing detail to the basket. The other side of the spool is similarily carved with a motif of harvest tools. The spool is threaded and screws and unscrews beautifully. I simply love this piece and have treasured it for years.
