MUNCIE Signed Pottery, Matte Green over Lilac 4" Vase, Shape #472, Vintage, Art
Muncie Art Pottery Vase Made by Muncie Pottery Co. of Muncie Indiana. This small vase is unmarked. Unmarked Muncie pieces are earlier pieces, circa 1922-1925. Marking by employees became standard starting around 1925, as the molders and finishers were paid piece rate for the number of pieces they completed. This vase shape was known as#472. The 472 vase shape came in several sizes, this piece is the smaller 4” size. The glaze color was known as“Matte Green over Lilac” This vintage art pottery vase is in good condition. But does have a couple of minor flaws. There is a rust stain on the top rim on one side. This stain is located mostly on the very top and the inner wall, but a trace of it is visible on the outer side. The underside has rust colored staining as well, but this isn’t visible when the piece is displayed. There is a slight trace ... moreof mineral deposit around the inner top edge, most likely caused by keeping a potted plant in the piece at one time. There are a few minor scuffs here and there on the sides. The glaze has crazing in most areas. On the inner floor there are a few small glaze bubble bursts. Here is a Muncie Pottery‘LOVE BIRDS” Lamp with a high glaze& green finish. Part of the line of items designed in 1929 for the Muncie Pottery Company by Reuben Haley and similar to the designs he did for Consolidated Glass Company in the 1930s according to distinguished author Jack Wilson in“Phoenix& Consolidated Art Glass 1926-1980” Antique Publications, Marietta, OH, 1989, page 105, illustration 747; pp 124&185. The vase measures about 9 ¾“tall and about 8 ½“ across at the widest part of the middle. The metal base stands about 2 3/8“tall. The finial appears to be of wood and is gilded as is the base. A previous owner had it rewired. Our photos were taken in daylight to take advantage of natural lighting. This"Love Birds" lamp is much more beautiful than our photos show. MUNCIE POTTERY“ORANGE PEEL” GLAZE VASE(Shape 136) The Muncie Company’s designs were influenced by the American Arts& Crafts movement and utilized decorations based on classic Grecian. Egyptian and American Indian designs. The shape of this interesting vase is similar to that of a classic Greek amphora or pouring vessel. MUNCIE” was stamped into the bottom of each piece around 1927. The“Orange Peel” glaze was developed in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The color of this vase is a pure orange with mica-like highlights. This vase is in excellent condition with no hairline cracks or crazing of the glaze. The vase has not been repaired in anyway. The piece has“MUNCIE” stamped into the bottom and is marked“5-A” indicative of the pottery finisher’s letter(A” and the molder’s number(5) The design number of the shape(136) is penciled on the bottom. ... moreCondition note: According to the authors of Collector’s Encyclopedia of Muncie Pottery. The pottery was cast thicker than most other pottery made during this period so manufacturing problems were fairly common. This item is an old ca. 1920-1930's Muncie(Muncie Pottery Co. Muncie, Indiana) 5-1/2 inch matt green over lilac drip glaze art deco style pitcher, with the pitcher in excellent overall lightly used condition. Pitcher has one tiny original bubble burst pin-hole in the glaze, and there is also some slight crazing, but there are no serious flaws. No chips, no cracks, no hairlines, no repairs, nor are there any other significant flaws. Pitcher stands 5-1/2 inches tall, it sits on a base that is 3-1/4 inches in diameter, and it is bottom marked with'Muncie' and a hand scribbed'IA' as we are showing in the attached images. Sweet Muncie RUBA ROMBIC Sugar Bowl Green Drip Over Purple
Here is a great Muncie Pottery Ruba Rombic sugar bowl with the green drip over purple glazes. This bowl was used as a planter and had extensive rusting inside and the top third on the outside. I was able to remove all of it on the outside and most of it on the top portion of the inside and lees further down. Fingers just aren't long enough. I used Barkeeper's Friend in the liquid form and would recommend using the powder form to remove the rest. It's stronger than the liquid. There is crazing but it is not nearly as visible after cleaning. There are three little chips I have shown in photos. 4" tall by 4" wide. Old ca. 1940s Boys Town Pottery 5in Hndld Vase, w/ Neat Fruitone Glaze, Muncie
This item is an old ca. 1940's Boys Town Pottery. 5inch vase, with a neat'fruitone' glaze, with the vase in excellent condition. Vase sits slightly lower on on side than the other, but there are no chips, no cracks, no hairlines, no repairs, nor are there any other flaws. Vase stands exactly 5 inches tall, it is bottom marked with the'BT' hand scribbed mark pictured, and the glaze is thick and exceptional. I am calling the glaze'fruitone' as it looks very much like the coloration found on winesap apples. The Boys Town Pottery was started in 1940, with the help of William Wilkins(and his father James) who apparently brought skills learned at Muncie and other art pottery companies with him when he came to Boys Town in 1940(see reference in the Rans& Eckleman Muncie Pottery book, page 187) The same resource describes ... morethe ceramics class at Boys Town as, one of the best high school ceramics courses in the country' but after the Wilkins passed on, things were never the same, interest in pottery declined, and the gift shop imported more and more souvenirs. Black Muncie Pottery Lamp, Base 12" Tall, Lamp 19.25" Tall, VG Cond.
This lamp shape is pictured in Collector's Encyclopedia of Muncie Pottery on page 161(copyright 1999) The one for auction is black. The base is 12" tall. And the whole lamp is 19.25" There are no nicks, no chips, no crazing, no hairlines to the pottery. The hole opening for the cord is nice and smooth. I do not know if the finial is original; screws on and off easily. It looks like everything is original. The cameo finial is worn on one side, please see pic. 8. Please email questions. Vintage Early Muncie G-3 Flowerpot Planter NR This is an early muncie flowerpot-planter. withith My grandparents had their first house ~ 1908-1910 and I suspect these came from their side. This is a rather plain. Small white flower pot with attached base. It is stamped MUNCIE. I haven’t seen anything like these available out there. The flower pot is the Muncie shape G3 and is the smallest of the three pots. Gloss white is not one of the typical Muncie glazes for two reasons. Most flower pots I have seen have a two-color drip glaze and white was hard to control and they had problems with it crazing. All the flower pots are harder to find items. A big"thank you" to Jack D. Wilson who helped me ID the pieces with information from“Collector’s Encyclopedia of Muncie Pottery” by Jon Rans and Mark Eckelman. You will certainly notice some ... moreof the Factory glaze problems on this pot. But I don't detect any obvious crackling. The glaze where the pot attaches to the saucer does show some bubbling and inside the pot the glaze has some speckles. Beyond that, the pot has a couple of hairline cracks to the saucer base and a flake to the edge of the saucer. About Muncie Pottery Muncie Pottery started production of art pottery in 1919 as the Muncie Clay Products Company. Muncie Pottery started as a subsidiary of the German-American Clay Company. Muncie Pottery like so many of the other American art pottery companies closed its doors as a victim of the depression in 1939. Muncie utilized a variety of glazes ranging from quality matte glaze to high gloss. Drip glazes. Muncie Pottery can be found both marked and unmarked. Marked examples of Muncie Pottery are usually stamped MUNCIE and/or marked with molder/finisher marks. These marks include combination of letters(A. This wonderful item was made by the Glascock Mfg Co in Muncie. Indiana on July 25, 1956. There is an interior canister with a Coca-Cola label.and also documentation when this item was made.I bought this and many other pieces of Coca-Cola Memorabilia from a couple in South Florida.The lady whose name was Joy said she was the daughter of the lady on the 1940's Sailor Girl tray. And that her husband and her had won this particular Stadium Dispenser bidding against Allen Petretti at an auction house in Atlanta, GA. There is a small crack in the Bakelite at the top. And it is pictured.but it does not take away from this items display-worthiness.I also believe but cannot prove-I believe this item was never ... moreused, and if it was it was surely cleaned by someone that knew its value even back in the 50's or quite simply took pride in their work. This dispenser is really a show piece and museum worthy.It was appraised in St. Petersburg. Old Indiana Muncie Pottery Small "Ruba Rombic" Vase designed by Reuben Haley
An estate find. This is a wonderful early Muncie Art Pottery vase probably done between 1919-1939(give or take! Pattern is"Ruba Rombic. COLOR- I had a very hard time getting the true color of the piece- It is more of a teal color or blue with a hint of greenish, and that's why I would call it teal- however, your idea of teal may be much different than mine.NONE of the pictures show the real true color- some look green, some look blue, and if I had to pick a color, I'd say it's more bluish. It is about 4" tall. Has some minor crazing, but it is not darkened crazing. There are some very tiny flea bites around the base, and there are 2 spots which I want to make sure you see- 2 very small(about 1/8" or smaller) indents- one being almost a crescent shape and the other almost oblong shape.they don't look like a classic"chip" ... moreand may be in the clay, or could be small bumps. Under magnification I can see some tiny brown specks that show mostly at the corners, that must be in the glaze, but they are not easily seen unless you look through a magnifying glass, and may be indicitave of Muncie glaze. The glaze appears thinner at the corners, and is a light beige color at those corners, but the glaze is intact. It has an incised"H" on the base, which is for Reuben Haley, a designer for Muncie. For Sale Large Heavy Floor Vase. Believed to be Muncie by several people and dates to about 1915 it is 16" tall and over 10" wide at the widest point, no chips or cracks, there are some light age cracks in the bottom they do not lead into the sides or glaze and are nothing to take away from the piece and fairly common to a jar of this size and age, we've been dealing in pottery for many years and beleive this piece to be quite rare in size and color, the color seems a bit darker in real life than in the pictures.
