1920's Bakelite Folding Ladies Opera or Reading Glasses Lorgnette Tortoise shell
Circa 1920. These are wonderful tortoise-shell colored reading/opera glasses for the discriminating socialite. The handle is 11" long and the eyeglass part is 4-1/4" from the hinge to the end of the pull. The glass appears to be somewhat magnifying, but I don't know the magnification level.There is one break at the bottom of one side(see picture) which I have not attempted to repair. It is very clean and should repair well. Other than that, they are perfect, with no other repairs or marks. The glass is in good condition and they are so much fun to use!They are made of Bakelite which I believe came out about 1907, one of the first plastics made from synthetic components. Posted with

These are very fine and beautiful opera glasses in Brass with Mother of Pear. They measure almost 4' across/ The handle is 5" and open at the bottom. So there might have been an extension, I do not now for sure. They are marked PARIS on the rim around the lens. Sterling items made in the US were not required to be marked and it was quite common for items not be marked sterling especially over 100 years ago. They measure approx 4-1/4" long. 4.25 inches across the spectacle part. There is a ring on the end of the handle which will attach to a chatelaine if preferred. However, there is a small blemish, almost like a wrinkle, which is hard to see that I included in the pictures. This is not damage and occurred during the firing of this piece.
