MASTER CRAFTSMANSHIP! Rare Japanese/Japan Kagura Buryu "ONI" Wood/Wooden Mask
11 inches tall. 7 inches wide. The is the deepest carved mask I have ever seen! From the inside the mask the forehead is 5 inches deep. Tip of the nose to the back of the mask edge is 6 inches of carved out mask! This is without a doubt the most impressive example of the possibilities of wooden mask carving I have ever come across in all my years of collecting! Picture yourself having finished carving either the exterior or interior of this mask. then trying to hold the delicate shell while you carve out the 6 inches of material out of the center of the mask! The quality of the paint further attests to the extreme skill and patience that went into this mask. Compare the bleeding edge of the golden teeth(or the limited lack there of on this one) to other examples and you will see the level of care that went into keeping these lines tight. ... moreThe cleanliness of the red paint sub-layer on the back side of the mask also attests to the level of care given to all aspects of this mask. The mask has dust laying in some areas. And could shine if one wanted to clean it up. I have not wanted to disturb the mask. I assume this mask is approximately 30-40 years old. Signed, Small horns at the top of the mask.Lovely flowing carved lines throughout. Extremely symmetrical. Amazing paint detail. Given the look and feel of the hair I think its bleached Japanese human hair. Unfortunately the person that sold it to me from Japan never disclosed the cracked and repaired jaw. The lower section of the jaw appears to have been glued back on. Look closely at the lower jaw where the"fangs" point down towards and you can see hair-line cracks) That said. I would rather have a repaired-piece-of-perfection rather than a never-damaged-runner-up myself. I have never seen another mask(from any culture) that rivaled this mask's quality. These are meant to be worn modern day folk festivals. These Kagura-Buryu masks originate some 800 years ago in Japanese culture. Its said that the samurai warriors of the time won a war with the help o
Master Craftsmanship! Japanese Wooden BURYU ONI Mask Japanese Kagura Dance
29.0cm/11.4" x 17.0cm/6.7" Here is an absolutely stunning work of art by a Japanese Artisan for modern day folk festivals. Character is ONI masks wards off devils/diabols. Approximately 800 years ago. The Samurai won a war with a foreign nation, with the the assistance of these types of ONI masks. This is in the top ten all time best masks that I've ever held. Both the wood work and painting exhibit once-in-a-life time quality and workmanship The Gold to black edge on the mask for instance is next to impossible to produce as normal even the slightest bleed line shows obvious flaws. This one has virtually none. Made of a single block of highly aged wood(likely 2+ years of aging) Likely in cedar. Extraordinary depth of carving.chin, tongue back to the hollows of the forehead is a large breath of real estate. A very fine hair-line ... moresize crack starting to be seen in the low left chin due to dryness/aging. And probably the only reasons the Japanese are ok"passing this off" to us. They aim for perfection much unlike us the Americans. Probably mid-century carved. This is a dying art unfortunately which has been telling historical arts for thousands of years. Last i knew. There were a dozen or less master maskmakers in the greater Tokyo area. The time. Perfection, and training to create such an object is this most astounding thing. A mask like this may have taken over a month for the carver using traditional techniques to choose the raw natural pigments and clay elements to hand grind the paint for this mask. Smooth flowing lacquer qualities. A rare piece; I know- I sold one about two years ago and this is the first ever seen since. Other masks of my collection might be up: Check out my!
Antique, DANCED, Japan/Japanese Wooden hannya, tengu, or buryu oni (Devil) Mask
8.0 x 6.5 inches( 20.4cm x 15.8cm) Here is an absolutely stunning work of antique art by a Japanese Artisan The item is likely from the late 19th century(ca 1890-1910) Given the block-style/deep carving techniques on areas such as the eyebrows and deep wrinkles on the forehead and type of paint. This is particularly exciting as its clearly been used/danced as attested by. The chin area of the mask has a heavy and aged patina against the natural wood area from the wearer's sweat. There are not just two. But four(4) holes to loop string into and tightly secure the mask to the wearer's head The reverse of the nose has been ergonomically recessed for the wearer's comfort Mostly likely used for outdoor folk festivals most likely in the streets. The character is representing a devil that has horns. This oni. May go under the name of ... morea hannya. Tengu, or buryu. I am honestly not sure which is the most accurate. Approximately 800 years ago. The Samurai won a war with a foreign nation, with the the assistance of these types of ONI masks. Made of a single block of highly aged wood(likely 2+ years of aging) This is a dying art unfortunately which has been telling historical arts for thousands of years. Last I knew. There were a dozen or less master mask makers in the greater Tokyo area. Its exceptionally rare to find a used/danced Japanese piece. This one being"sold off" due to the Japanese culture of perfection(Notice how one horn has been replaced) The piece would have originally had some hair that seated in the small round holes at the top of the mask as well. That all said. Its high quality, antique, danced, and its condition is commensurate with its age. so its a bit of a shame that they would loose sight of this piece's cultural importance. Gold paint used originally on the eyes. Teeth, and around the horns. again attesting to the quality of the piece as it was originally created. Other masks of my collection might be up: Check out my!
