Custom Hand-Fabricated Radio Controlled Chris Craft Styled Honda Powered Boat
This is the second handcrafted masterpiece model boat we have had the chance to show this year. The first was an exact replica of the 1950’s Disney’s‘Nautilus’ from the movie“20.000 Leagues Under the Sea” Amongst the many radio controlled sailing ships built by Larry, a boat representing a Wooden Power Craft of the 50’s was also built, the boat that is being presented here. The builder was an ex-employee of Lockheed in the fabrication department who had retired to Southern Oregon many years ago. Rather then fishing or knitting. Larry continued with his passion, which was fabricating from scratch, ships and boats he had admired for many years. Larry passed away about three years ago and his estate has asked us to find the right home for the unbelievable model. I have not found an exact model of Boat that this recreation represents specifically. ... moreSome say it looked like a 1950’s Chris Craft. Others said it looked a bit like a PT Boat Hull. Being that Larry was creating the boat he pictured in his mind, it maybe a blend of ideas that fit his tastes as he created it. What is obvious is the extreme quality of workmanship and thoroughness of design. The top decking is beautifully laid out, symmetrically designed with a fit and finish only a cabinet builder can appreciate completely. The images attempt to show the depth of pain staking beauty created but it really can only be understood when seen in person. The bottom of the boat is painted and has marks and spots from being left on the cradle for many years. To be right, it needs to be refinished. The hull is about 6’ long and about 19” inches wide at the widest point. We assume that it was Larry’s desire to have the boat sit at a correct water line that lead him to install at least 60 pounds of ballast. The boat weighing about 100 pounds finished including the battery, engine and fittings. The images show the layout of the drivetrain and controls, all easily accessible by removing the seat cushions.
