These gourd bowls are all placed upon a half of a gourd that has numerous strings threaded into it with all of the decorative devices tied and knotted at their ends to create a dome of color.The whole container would be a gourd split in half. A half ... morewould be used as the bowl and the other half as a lid. Such containers were used by the Fon of Benin to keep valuable items or cosmetics. Interestingly. A very similar box from The Robbins Center For Cross Cultural Communication. Antique Wooden Indian Hindu Shrine Temple with Nandis (holy cows).
You are bidding on my antique wooden Indian Hindu Temple/Shrine. I have shown the piece to several London dealers of antique and Asian furniture/ boxes etc and all are in agreement that the wood is believed to be teak with iron banding/straps and there is an orangey brown wax type substance over. The opposing figures towards the front are Nandis(holy cows) And I have been told that it is becoming harder to find this type of example now. The Shrine is over a hundred years old. The wood has a very tactile feel to it and it is truly a wonderful piece. It would have been used in the home or place of work and the deity of choice would have been placed in the centre and then offerings of flower petals and rice placed around. Here is a World War II Japanese battle flag. It looks like silk. It has ties on two of the corners. It came from a Japanese soldier on the island of Luzon in the Phillippines in early 1945. It is in decent shape but does have a few small stains. It is 25 x 17 inches. It has three red shrine stamps. I am told the larger writing on the right side in photo 1 says'Selfless Patriotic Service" NOTE: The white mark in the red circle in photo 2 was just a loose string(not part of the flag) it has been removed. Very rare and beautiful Hand carved ANRI Madonna and Child Wood Carving in Wayside Shrine Wall Plaque. Can also be set on a table or mantle-somewhat precariously. Both sides(top and bottom) of the base have the opening slit for the upper part. The measurement of the wooden shrine is about 12 inches tall by 10 inches wide. The carved Madonna and Child measures about 7.25 x 4.75 inches. Measurements are approximate. Has the original ANRI sticker. The carving is stunning in shades of green-blue/cream/ orange-red with gold gilt rim. Condition of the Wooden outsidePlaque. The wooden shrine has some edge wear to the wood. Including a sliver of wood loss on left of back. Can't be seen when displayed and doesn't affect use, also tiny nick on edges of wooden plaque-overall nice vintage condition. In the back at the top is a hole for hanging ... moreon a screw(screw not included) On the right side inside is a small smudgy area. Most likely can be wiped away. There are screws on the back where the plaque was attached to the wooden shrine. Condition of the hand carved Madonna-only imperfections noted-a tiny dark dot on the infant's nose and a dark line on Mary's hand-Negligible really. Overal l lovely! You will be pleased.
