It shows a man with long hair and beard in a long fluted robe with a sash across his left shoulder. In the left hand. He is holding a book and in the right hand, either he has his hand folded under or the fingers are missing. I was told by an art expert that this is most likely a disciple because his head is turned sideways as if he were to be looking at Jesus. I don't know if it could be St. Peter or which one would be associated holding a book. When I bought this statue, it was not mounted but we had it mounted on this wooden platform. It could be just as easily removed if so desired. The color of the wood is a rich blackish brown with a very old aged patina. With the platform, he stands 14.25" high and without the platform, he stands 13.25" high and is 5" wide and 2" deep and he is flat on the back and there is a hole in the middle which makes me think that he was attached to a larger tableau- possibly in a church. Disciple, circa 1600-1700's Santos This auction is for a carving that I bought from an estate in Switzerland. It shows a man with long hair and beard in a long fluted robe with a sash across his left shoulder. In the left hand. He is holding a book and in the right hand, either he has his hand folded under or the fingers are missing. I was told by an art expert that this is most likely a disciple because his head is turned sideways as if he were to be looking at Jesus. I don't know if it could be St. Peter or which one would be associated holding a book. When I bought this statue, it was not mounted but we had it mounted on this wooden platform. It could be just as easily removed if so desired. The color of the wood is a rich blackish ... morebrown with a very old aged patina. With the platform, he stands 14.25" high and without the platform, he stands 13.25" high and is 5" wide and 2" deep and he is flat on the back and there is a hole in the middle which makes me think that he was attached to a larger tableau- possibly in a church. Unusual Antique Santos de St. Michael the Angel Polychromed Sculpture
This is an unusual Antique Santos of St. Micahel the Archangel carved from wood. With polychromed paint. Probably South American in origin. Coloration is mainly blues and reds, and the wings are made from tin. It sits on a base, also of wood, and detaches from this base. The arms can also detach from the body, but they are not broken off. It measures 8" high x 7" wide. In great vintage condition. Note: These items are sold in"as in" condition.

Offering a magnificent very large and heavy antique santos or saint statue. This beautiful piece is of Saint Roch. Of Potenza, Italy. Wikepedia tells us"he is invoked) against: cholera, epidemics, knee problems, plague, skin diseases. Patron Saint of: bachelors, diseased cattle, dogs, falsely accused people, invalids, Istanbul, surgeons, tile-makers,gravediggers, second-hand dealers, pilgrims, apothecaries" in short, he is a very busy saint. He is featured here holding up his tunic to reveal his plague bubo(although there is no such bubo in evidence here) Symbolic of victory over pain and death. He is standing with a dog, who is traditionally offering him a piece of bread(no bread here) St Roch measures approx 13" tall and the dog is 4" tall. The entire piece measures approx 19" tall and is very heavy. Overall condition ... moreis extremely good with the following observations: the saint is missing his arm from the wrist. The piece is dusty, dirty and worn with one large split in the base. There is a good amount of very beautiful paint left throughout and the carving is lovely and skillfully done. Up for auction is a hand carved antique Jesus crucifix religious Santos woodenware statue recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia. PA area. It is found in good used condition considering the age. It is difficult for me to place this in the proper time and era, but it certainly an antique. This is offered in untouched condition, with its natural finish which includes remnants of original paint. It is missing the right arm and its original cross. There are losses to both the paint and gesso. Please see the photos for details. There are several scrapes on all sides as well. A wonderful accent in any setting. And her base is 5" by 3-1/2" It looks to me that Mary is carved out of one piece of wood(except for applied hands) and then attached to a layered wooden plinth, alsoe carved out of a single piece of wood. Mary's hands are most interesting, as one features all five fingers and the other is a smaller hand in a"mitten" shape. Don't know the significance of this.it seems to be the same wood and same paint. Please note the wonderful folk art details.braided belt, puffed sleeves, robe closure, etc. The paint is wearing in areas which just adds to the great look of this piece. On the front it has a paper sticker that says"Our Delicious Coffee. The coffee bin also has elaborate lettering"Roasted Coffee" and a raised metal piece that says"Choice Santos. Wonderful antique colonial old wood carved Santos figure has glass eyes. A charming expression, and great patina to the polychrome paint. Appraised by Leslie Hindman auction service, they called this figure"Continental" or probably mid to late 1700's. Measures 15" tall. The base is not original but probably replaced sometime back for stability reasons. There is some flecking to the polychrome and worm holes on the back and a small metal plate(don't know what that's about) left hand is a bit rough for wear. A treasure for admirers of old art! I think rare is often over-used on ebay. But it is indeed rare for a figure like this to have survived a non-museum environment intact! Hand carved from wood, glass eyes, articulated knees, thighs, elbows and sholders, this is an amazing piece of old-time craftsmanship. I feel comfortable dating this no later than the early 1800's, possibly 1700's. Very nice expression, has alot of wear to polychrome paint(see photos) Does have some worm holes, but is not chipped or cracked. Eyes are glass. Feet are clad with old leather glued on bottom(probably had sandal straps on top at some point) He measures 20" tall. Clothing is tattered. Probably is not original- looks more Victorian era. Offered is a beautiful old wooden religious figure in the form of the Madonna with halo. Measuring approx. 12.5 inches in height. The carved wooden Madonna is surrounded by a halo of finely woven reed grasses. Height including the halo is approx. 16.5 inches. The Santos measures approx. 13 inches wide, including the halo. There is a small paper label with penciled writing which reads Made in Mexico” The front of the Madonna is painted a soft. Sea green, with touches of gold. The reverse of the Madonna is painted robin’s-egg blue. Madonna and halo are heavily encrusted with cranberry-red glass beads, simulated pearl beads, multi-colored sequins, paper doily and embroidered Mexican rose. Condition of the wooden Madonna statue is good. The woven reed halo is badly damaged, with losses, as shown. There are losses to the beaded and sequined embellishment, ... morealso as shown. I am thoroughly enchanted by this charming figure, with her elaborate yet humble beaded embellishment; no semi-precious stones, no bits of silver. The artisan that created her used what was available. The losses and damage do not offend me, as they are evidence of many years of devoted hands that have tended to her. She is beautiful.

Antique Spanish Colonial Christo- Santos ~ Mexican or Latin American ~ Mid 19th- Early 20th Century ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height(including base) 12.5” Base- 5.5” x 7.5” DESCRIPTION: Antique Spanish Colonial style Christo or Santos dating from the mid 19th or very early 20th century and originating from Mexico or Latin America. I believe this is a figure of Jesus Christ kneeling and probably dates to about circa 1880- 1900. Made of carved and joined wood. Nails, inset glass eyes, a cloth cape, a metal forehead ornament, and metal wire crown(of thorns) The figure has been coated with gesso and painted over most of it’s body. However the abdomen and upper arms seem to have been left unpainted. It probably had a shirt at one time and the cape may not be original, but is old. The arms can be moved as they ... moreare nailed or pinned at the shoulders. His head can be moved to look in different directions and can be removed as it is just held in place with a nail or thin wire rod. This rendition of Christ shows him as a black man or with very dark skin. Most apparent on the arms and the face. This may be an indication that it is from Southern Mexico or Guatemala where this coloring is common on Christos. AGE: Mid 19th- Early 20th Century CONDITION: Good ethnographic condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Extreme weathering to the painted surfaces with overall wear and losses to the gesso and painted surfaces. It looks as though it may have been kept outside for some of it’s existance. Light rust to the metal surfaces(crown, nails, ornamet) Fading and wear to the cloth cape. Possibly had a halo or head ornament at one time(small hole in the top of the head. No losses to the fingers. Carved facial features intact. Maximón(pronounced maa-shee-MOHn) Also called San Simón, is a folk saint venerated in various forms by Maya people of several towns in the highlands of Western Guatemala. The veneration of Maximón is not approved by the Roman Catholic Church. An old carved wood santos of maximon. Measures approximately 6.5" x 2" we'll worn and old. This is just the torso and head. No telling where or what happened to the arms and legs. Powerful piece. The origins of his cult are not very well understood by outsiders to the different Mayan religions. But Maximón is believed to be a form of the pre-Columbian Maya god Mam, blended with influences from Spanish Catholicism. Offering a beautiful antique wax baby Jesus doll. He is 10" tall. This particular doll has holes in the feet which indicate he was standing at one time on a stand of some sort. Perhaps he was in a French wedding dome. A Globe de Mariee, surrounded by flowers. However he was displayed, he is coming to you now and one has infinite wonderful ways to display Our Little Lord with reverence and beauty. He has beautiful blue glass eyes and when I can think of the name for the glass, I will add it. His hands and legs and I guess head, are antique, but added to a newer body. He still carries his cross. His hair has loss as one can see. There are damages as told in the condition box and as one can see from the photos. Obviously, he is not for everyone, but I love him just the same. It very old and was repaired, glued broken head but it not visible so clear and added to statue unique look.On statue neck i hanged beaded tassel which have very unique"angel face" with bow which i took from vintage Coro brooch.
