For sale is a superb Japanese salt or pepper shaker. Underneath it features the Jungin mark. Meaning Pure silver, dating the piece to the Meiji period. Its craftsmanship is of the highest quality, showing the texture of the foundation and the grain of the wood. It measures 2+1/4" tall 1+7/8" wide and almost 2" deep from the steps to the edge. 1922 Nile Temple Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S. Scrimshaw Faux Whale Tooth w/ Wood Carving
This auction features a fabulous vintage Nile Shrine scrimshaw dated 1922. It is really two pieces in one. As the scrimshaw acts as the'base' for a wooden bust of a male character, adhered to the scrimshaw with a type of glue. He is in excellent condition with only minor damage to his headdress where there is a noticeable break; I do not believe much detail is missing. The main star, though, is the scrimshaw piece itself, which is faux whale tooth. I did the hot pin test and it definitely produced a burnt hair odor, indicating it is actually bone despite its appearance. The engraved image depicts a person riding atop a camel in the Egyptian desert, heading towards the left and towards the Sphinx, the pyramids in the background. To the right, behind the camel, is the crest symbol for the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic ... moreShrine, or A.A.O.N.M.S. also commonly known as the Shriners. There is a wikipedia page available under that listing. Below the image, it says in an Old English type of letter style, Nile Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. Hugh Caldwell, Potentate 1922. Upon further research, I found the"Nile Shrine Golf Center" of Washington State's website, which gives a history of their organization and confirms that Noble Hugh M. Caldwell was serving as their Illustrious Potentate in 1922, and that during that year he led a pilgrimage to the Orient, during which they purchased a young female camel in China whom they christened"Nile. It is little wonder, then, why a person riding a camel is the main focus of the scrimshaw imagery. I do not know who, specifically, made this scrimshaw, and whether it was made by the A.A.O.N.M.S. as a souvenir or for the A.A.O.N.M.S. as a gift. But either way, as every scrimshaw is done by hand and therefore one of a kind, it's safe to say that this piece is definitely unique, and a true treasure indeed for any collector of scrimshaw or anyone affiliated with the A.A.O.N.M.S. I have been contacted by the original owner's Son and Granddaughter and they have passed along this info to me. I very much appreciate it. Robert Curran and Harold Braucht rented a little space at the Oklahoma Publishing Co in the corner of a room in 1933 with one roller press. Robert was in charge of the art& production. And Harold was the sales and promotion guy. The early posters had the art drawn on wood, for each color and the wood carved away to elevate the printing surface. They then used block letter type faces to complete the layout. As the business grew they moved into a couple of locations on their own, and purchased more presses from a firm in Chicago.Those huge presses were so loud, almost all of the printers had hearing problems later in life. They were early users of lithography printing. Making their own plates and ... morephotographic work. They pretty much stayed with entertainment printing. Circuses, and Amusement attractions. They did print a world war 2 bond poster, with the Minute Man and the Pioneer Woman statue on it. One may still be hanging in the state capital. They did snipe printing for the Clyde Beatty Circus. And Barnum& Bailey Circus. To save the cost of shipping paper, sent the plates to a little shop they established in Lodi Ca. During WW2. They enticed one of the Carnivals to set up in downtown Okla. We cannot begin to describe how rare this is. Offered is a Zuni Ceremonial Shrine from the 1920s depicting the Ko'Loowisi. Which is the initiation of young boys with their offerings. Zuni ceremonial shrines are seldom seen except in museums and we can't remember the last time we saw on on the retail market. The piece measures 10"long by 6" wide by 7.75" tall. The base and figures are all painted in wonderful old mineral paints and as is the case with all Zuni kachinas, the arms n the figures are movable. It is unsigned, but a description is written on the base and a small, old price tag of $1800 remains taped on. El Jebel Shrine Masonic Bolo Tie Vintage
Nice! This El Jebel bolo tie is vintage. There is no wear on the cording. Which is a coral color with gold detailing. The logo slide has a light scratch on the front right of the moon(is it a moon? I do not believe this is real silver. I know this tie is over 40 years old, probably more like 50 or 60. It is in REMARKABLE condition.
