Ando Hiroshige(Japanese, 1797-1858) The title of this striking image is Takuhi Shrine in Oki Province. It is from Hiroshige’s breathtaking series Famous Views of the 60-Odd Provinces and was published by Senkakudo in 1905. Well over 100 years ago. Prints from this edition were reproduced in such detail and have aged with such a beautiful patina that they are often mistaken for originals. They are, without a doubt, among the finest reprints ever made of this incredible series. Consequently, they are high demand by serious collectors. 9 Tiny Pottery Antique Japanese "Beckoning" Cats--Samurai Style, from Shrine
These little cats are the"manneki neko" cats that beckon good luck. They are made of pottery and are dressed in Edo Period samurai style clothing. I got them in Japan in the 1990s. They are the old style that was sold by Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka at the subshrine to Hattatsu Inari. People collected them on a special day and kept them in a special glass case at home. The new ones are hollow and not this dense old style pottery. Each cat is stamped on the back with the words"Hattatsu Sumiyoshi" see last photo) which refers to the First day of the Dragon(the day on which people worshipped at this shrine) and Sumiyoshi. The name of the large Shinto shrine. Each cat is 1.5 inches high and 1.25 inches wide. Five of them welcome luck with their right paw; four with the left. The photos show the condition of all 9. Really suburb, and opens to reveal three Chinese deities. The primary in the center is Quan Yin(Kwan Yin, Kannon, Kuan Yin, Guan Yin) the most popular Bodhisattva in Buddhism Guan Yin is highly revered as the principle of compassion, mercy and love. It is believed that Guan yin is the patron saint of mothers and grants parents filial children. Has characters on the front shrine with floral panel in the center. This traveling shrine stands 8 ½” tall and is 4” wide, when opened it measures 8 ½” wide. It is in very good condition, at the top of the center portion there is a crack and it looks like it has been repaired. He is known for his power to overcome demons and ghosts. Quite a bit of decoration on the outside with an elaborate landscape scene that might be recounting the legend of the third prince shown perhaps meeting with his Taoist Master. The pagoda roof maybe a reference to the golden pagoda which could subdue him that his father Li Ching was given by an immortal. The shrine stands 9 ½” tall and is 4” wide. When opened it measures 9” wide. It is in very good condition, on the top there is a seam line crack at the back and on the inside at the inside top there is also a hairline crack…difficult to see. This pair of antique early Taisho period(c. 1914) Japanese chataku. Or teacup saucers, feature a form of artwork that is seldom made today. It is made of copper, which has been formed into a plum blossom design. There are several images, including the front of Meiji Shrine, an arch in the garden surrounding it, and the paulownia blossom that represents the imperial household. Written on the saucer in Japanese is"Meiji Shrine, Commemoration of Prayer Ceremony. Full, fine embroidery on the front, and a little brass Sphinx head above a small red stone, seemingly some kind of early plastic. It’s in the original black vinyl case with cartoonish graphics at the top, a secure clasp, and concrete dating: December 4 th. 1923/ Salina, Kansas. Original cloth label inside from M. Hefter’s Sons, 79081 Flatbush Ave. Brooklyn. The initials‘VEH’ are handwritten on the label; perhaps those are the initials of the original owner. The fez is in very good condition. This is 3 antique Japanese copper clad souvenir ashtrays. The small trays measure just over 4 1/2" in diameter. The bigger ashtray measures 5 3/4" in diameter and the top flips up to insert a lighter. We're not 100% sure that this is the lighter that goes with the set. But it looks as though it does. The bigger ashtray has a silver colored main gate to the shrine on the bottom and is covered with glass. The bigger ashtray is also much heavier than the smaller ones. SHRINE EUROPEAN CLUD SILVER ANNIVERSAY MEDALLION 1953-1978 1000 FINE SILVER
This lot contains a SCARCE 19.9 gm. 34 mm, 1000 FINE SILVER(edge stamped) EUROPEAN SHRINE silver anniversary medallion dated 1953-1978. The medallion is also edge stamped with serial number 892(this would indicate a mintage of 1,000 or less) FYI- during the great silver melt of 1979-1980 large amounts of anything made silver ended up in the melting pots of refiners around the world and I would be this item was no exception. Whatever the original mintage was we would have to discount those amounts and would have no bases for value.
