And also did a bunch of local shopping this week– from estate to barn sales, with a favorite antique store thrown in too. Lots of early primitives, Victorian, military, ephemera– there’s something for everyone! Ever since I purchased some santos' hands a month or so ago. I'm obsessed with these beautiful folk art pieces- so I was thrilled to stumble upon this beauty. It's an old Central American hand carved Santos- I'm not sure who the saint is, but his skin is dark and he stands with a raised crucifix held in his hand. This is a folk art piece- all hand carved from solid wood and hand painted too. It measures 2" by 1 3/4" at the base, 1 7/8" widest by 1 1/2" deepest at the body of ... morethe saint and stands 7 1/8" tall. It weighs 1/4 lb. It's in excellent solid and sturdy structural condition, with lots of rustic wear to his wood and paint- scratches, scrapes, nicks, dings, finish war with wood showing, and he has a rub to the tip of his nose, past the paint and lightly scraping the wood- I wouldn't change a thing! It's all part of the story of this rustic oldee- I think he's gorgeous. Is it me, or does he look unhappy? Maybe he'll smile when he gets a new home. SUPERB PAIR 18TH CENTURY MEXICAN SANTOS EVANGELIST FIGURES This pair of 18th Century Evangelist santos figures are in rare original condition. As they have been together for over two centuries. I do not wish to separate them now and am selling them together, as a pair, for one price. They were probably carved in one of the great colonial era eclesiastical centers of Mexico, either Mexico City or Puebla, in the late 18th century. They are finely and delicately carved by a master craftsman, and covered with the original gesso and painted in the"Estofado" technique. They are fairly large, 13 inches tall. There is some minor flaking of the gesso, which is to be expected, but overall they are in excellent condition. Antique Large Santos Wooden Header Plaque I am selling what I think would be a rare item to find. A man brought this frtom some town in New Mexico back in the 60's when he moved up here. He is getting up in years and is letting a lot of early items go hat he has always kept. He said this came from a church top that was about to be run down back in the late 50's. He moved here in 1961 and has had it ever since. He said it was some kind of catholic monastry or something like that. It is 39 1/4" w x 20" h and it is over 2" thick. This is a really neat antique wood carved doll/figure for your consideration. He is 11" tall and is in overall good condition for his age. I was told the 18th century. But this is not my specialty so please ask all questions in advance) He does have a repair at the left shoulder and there are some minor knicks to the paint and around the eyes and finger tips. The one hand is out stretched as if he were holding something. The other hand is clenched as if holding a walking stick. His shoes are metal, maybe silver-plated. He has a metal halo on his head. This is a hand carved Mexican statue of Saint Gabriel blowing his trumpet. It is from the late 1800's to the early 1900's and has been blessed by a Mexican catholic priest along with the other four Santos that we have for sale. Gabriel is mentioned in both the Old and the New Testaments. In the Old Testament he appeared to the prophet Daniel delivering explanations of Daniel's visions. In the Gospel of Luke Gabriel appeared to Zecharias and the Virgin Mary foretelling the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. In German; please scroll through to end of listing to read"a clue to the angel's history. Beautifully carved. The carving is tactile. With pleasing symmetry. Movement and vibrancy- the inner feathers look very ruffly and tousled. While the outer form is very controlled and balanced. It is a poetic design. One could say the angel radiates peace and harmony as the outer design is very neat. Symmetrical and circular. Yet at the angel's heart, or center, there is a vibrancy and energy. Perhaps symbolizing her soul. Gilded with real gold applied over gesso and bole. Carved from a light-weight finely grained hardwood. Likely linden or lime. This is a frieze. ... moreWith flat back; it likely once adorned an altar or other religious structure. As you can see in the photos this angel really shines when brightly lit; the gilding is ever so lovely. It is real gold. There was no synthetic gold in the 1800s. Gesso(plaster) and bole(red pigment clay) were applied over the carved wood to provide a smooth surface for the gold; the bole lends the gold a rich red undertone. Condition- Some age crackling and loss to gilding. As to be expected with a piece over 200 years old. Looks wonderful from the front. The back shows some repair. This is a delicate old piece. The wood is very dry and fragile. This was likely removed from its mount at some point. As I see old adhesive residue on the back. Back shows some glue reinforcement/ repair to damage in two spots. A tassel and the middle swag piece are reattached. Another repair to wing tip is likely original to the time of the carving's creation. The hole and rivet to hang this may have been added later. The only repair that is noticed from the front. And then only under close examination. Is to the left bottom tassle. On the back. A clue to the angel's history: part of a very ol

Just a phenomenal piece of religious art. An 18th century Spanish Colonial Christ child. He hails from a Spanish cathedral and was designed to lay in a nativity creche. He is in very good shape for his age with appropriate wear. His head does come disattached but is extremely stable from previous restoration. He was also professionally converted to a stand for purposes of display. Rosaries are for display only- not included with santos.

We have an antique Catholic statue of child Jesus, also called Santo Niño in some parts of the world, standing on a wooden plinth. This artisan crafted wooden statue is adorned in renaissance attire, with a nicely gilded robe, designed with ornate accents. Child Jesus is holding the traditional globus cruciger on his left hand, signifying sovereignty. His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, with two fingers raised symbolizing the two natures of Jesus Christ and the three folded fingers represent the Holy Trinity. These statues are often popular in the homes of Spanish countries, where the Catholic faith is practiced. The statue stands 8 3/4 inches tall by 3 7/8 inches wide, and 12" with plinth. Antique Hand Carved Wood Virgin Mary European 17th Century This is a very interesting sculpture. She is completely carved of wood. I am not sure of what kind wood. She has tiny iron pins that perhaps held an infant or sacred heart. It is from Europe and is part of a religious collection I purchased recently. The former owner acquired very rare and interesting religious artifacts over many years. Please check my other listings as this was a wonderful and rare find. This statue is not without issues. I t is missing arms. Has cracks and chipping but is beautifully carved. She has interesting hair, large eyes and there are lovely folds carved into the wood for the cape. At one point she might have held the infant Jesus or perhaps there was a sacred heart across her chest. Antique SANTOS - Large 20" Carved Wood Polychrome Figure LATIN AMERICAN
This is a large antique Santos measuring 20 inches tall with polychrome paint. Estimated age is 19th century or earlier and believed to be from Latin America. Possibly representing Saint Anthony. The figure is dressed in a blue robe elaborately decorated in white, gold and red, completed with red shoes. There is paint flaking due to age and the hands are partially intact. There is a piece of metal nailed to the head. The figure is structurally sound with no repairs apparent, there is minor splitting in the wood on the base. The weight of the figure is 4 1/2 lbs. The base measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" with rings evident in the unpainted wood underneath. Please inspect all photos as they are part of the description. Charming"Santos" carved wooden polychrome figure measures 12"h x 5"w x 4" deep and weighs a bit over one pound. Obviously crafted with great care. This carved"saint" with his beatific gaze is an example of fine workmanship as evidenced by the detail in the carved folds of his cloak, the fine features of his bearded face and the toes of his exposed foot! The brick red robe with gold touches and the blue of his garment have aged to a lovely patina. He is presented"as found" missing one arm(see close-up photo) Despite this wound, or perhaps because of it, he retains an air of dignity and grace.

2 ft tall Antique Madonna SANTOS Wood Carving From an Old Church/ Virgin Mary
This large solid wood carving depicts the Madonna and Child. It is a very rare due to the carving being made from the heartwood of the tree. The two figures are carved in the same style. Of Spanish origin. The Madonna is wearing a crown, sitting with the child in her left hand. She holds the world in her right hand. Like most Santos figurines, the artist is unknown. On the back. There are holes where the piece had been mounted in a Spanish church or religious setting. Although the date of creation is unknown, the appraiser told me the style and condition of the piece suggest it was made in the mid to late 1800's, very possibly earlier. Has some gold gilt coloring over the wood which may have been added later. Overall it is in good condition besides the splits and chips in the carving from age. Antique Santos of St. Vincent Ferrer 18/19th C. With WIngs
100% Authentic. Philippines. His one hand has been lost over time which is usual for most old Santos statues. However the other hand holds a Bible and the statue is completely intact. This Santos is one of the most complete examples I have ever seen for sale. The wings. Which are almost always lost, are completely attached(cracking and nails as shown in photo) and the gesso paint finish is still original and complete except for normal aging. The wings signifies of him being an angel. An Angel of the Last judgment. Other than previously described this Santos is in absolutely remarkable condition for its age and type. 9 inch antique mannequin Santos head
This listing is for about 9 inch antique mannequin head that was purchasd by me on ebay on 2009 and it was sent from the Philippines that said the following: This 9 inch mannequin head was used as Mary Magdalene and used in processions and religious festivals on a 4 foot mannequin. The head has small holes in the ears for earrings and one small hole in the top of the head for a crown. And it has original glass eyes. There is a minor surface cracks around the base of the neck as you can see in the picture.
