Angus, Scotland. 19th Century. SIZE: Length: 25 1/2mm. Width: 20 3/4mm. Depth: 10mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 28.71 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Throughout ancient and medieval history. The color purple was traditionally the color of royalty, and was also associated with the planet and the Roman God Jupiter the“Lord of Gods” of the Roman pantheon, also known as Zeus to the ancient Greeks) Consequentially Amethyst has been used since the dawn of recorded history to adorn the wealthy, as well as royalty. Ancient civilizations prized the stone more than many other gems which today enjoy more recognition and value, including sapphire, ruby, diamonds and emerald. For some time in the ancient world, amethyst was valued equally with the diamond, and only royal families were lawfully entitled to own and wear the stone. Amethyst was used extensively in the ancient Mediterranean world for carving intaglio gemstones and seals, particularly by the ancient Greeks and Romans. And in both ancient Greece and Rome rings of amethyst set in bronze were worn as charms against evil. The first century historian and naturalist Pliny wrote that if amethyst were worn round the neck on a cord made from dog's hair, it would afford the wearer protection against snakebite. Celebrating our historical legacy here's a very large. Very clean, 19th century faceted amethyst pear from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Exported to Russia, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medie

NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: During the Middle Ages an emerald amulet was believed to keep a woman chaste. Medieval shamans and magicians believed that emeralds enabled them to foretell future events if put on the tongue or worn on the left side of the body. Emeralds were also believed to reveal what was true or false. And to give eloquence in speech and make people more intelligent and honest. Worn as a talisman, emerald was regarded as a sure antidote for enchantments and spells, was believed to repel evil spirits, and it was believed that a high quality emerald would change hues to alert the wearer to impending danger. In many medieval legends of King Arthur, the Holy Grail(the cup used to catch Christ’s blood at the crucifixion) is described as being fashioned from a large emerald. In the Renaissance medical practitioners ground up emerald with laudanum, an opium derivative, as a medicine for certain fevers and ailments. Here's a very nice. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Chinese Buddhist Clay Shrine Tile. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Liao Dynasty(907-1125 A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 243 millimeters(9 3/4 inches) Width: 188 millimeters(7 1/2 inches) Thickness: 25 millimeters(1 inch) Weight: 3 pounds. 6 ounces(about 1½ kilograms) CONDITION: Exceptional. Integrity entirely intact. No significant chips or cracks. Minor surface crazing. Professionally conserved. Can be sealed upon request. DETAIL: This is a very beautiful. Intricately detailed gray clay tile from the Liao Dynasty of ancient China. These clay tiles were used to decorate the inside walls of Buddhist shrines. The depiction is somewhat reminiscent of a Hindu depiction. Of course Buddhism came to China from Hindu India, and there exist of course many parallels between the Chinese and Indian variants of Buddhism. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Europe was an industry for the seafaring mariners of the 16th. 17th, and 18th centuries. Entire fleets of sailing ships plied the trade, especially the Dutch and English. However in addition to porcelain, ancient Chinese ceramics were also extremely popular in Vi
