A charming little hand carved Black Forest bear with an upturned and charming face is ever at the ready tabletop with your spool of thread and your thimble. These sewing trinkets were very popular with Grand Tour travelers who visited the Alpine villages of Switzerland. Germany, even parts of France, where remarkably talented carvers supplied them with a wide variety of choices in carved forest mementos, from little bears and animals like this one to huge carved china cabinets, hunt themed wall plaques, incredibly fine clocks housed in forest themed carvings and jewelry boxes galore. Each tourist's memento that survives today is a testament to the Old World carvers' amazing skill, patience, and industry. They are fabulous accents for Country French or English Manor decor, or cabin& ski lodge, alike. Fabulous for all types of settings, the whimsical to the magnificent still fascinate us today as they did in 19th century and very early 20th century. One of my favorite Christmas decor themes was found in Dallas when we still had a shop in the design district there, and it was a huge centerpiece adorned with many of the most wonderful BF bears, amid pine boughs and other ornaments, it was magical- stunningly beautiful. Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, fruits of the hunt" I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration, Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques- from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy- these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood. This one is a charming little bear sewing stand, complete with the pin cushion backpack and still holding an old wooden spool of thread. Estate-found vintage(we believe to be) circa 1930s- 1950 hand-carved figurine of an old barefoot hobo or beggar with sacks on his back and a walking stick in his right hand. The sculpture is original and well executed but unsigned, we are guessing to have been made in the Black Forest or Bavaria area of Germany& to be made out of walnut or another similar type of hard wood. It measures a substantial 24-1/2” high to the top of the hat x& across the hips x 8” deep across the base and weighs approximately 6.5 lbs. on a postal scale! The patina has developed a really nice, warm mellow glow– the surface is untouched/original but could use a light cleaning/dusting. The carving is well done and very reminiscent of the style used in the second quarter of the twentieth century. The face, beard, hands& toes are well delineated as are his clothes, cane and bowl in the left hand. Condition: Has some expected wear commensurate with the age to include– an old chip to the tip of the none(old- as the color of the wood has oxidized to match the rest of the statue) and a 1” stress fracture to the hat from shrinkage of the wood

Antique Black Forest Hand Carved Clock Set
For your consideration is this beautiful Black Forest three piece clock set. The clock is 28 1/2" tall and 16" at the base. The candle holders are 12" tall and 7" wide. The clock is one solid piece of wood that has been skillfully carved depicting Chamois on a rock outcropping with Edelweiss, an alpine flower, and ferns. The candle holders are carved depicting a Chamois at the base of a tree trunk, again with Edelweiss and ferns. Each candle holder has a ornate brass topper. The movement is French and is stamped AD Mougin. It strikes a bell on the hour and half hour. The movement runs fine and keeps excellent time. The glass bezel has no chips or cracks and snaps when shut. The dial is porcelain with a ornate brass overlay and it is in excellent condition as well. Sometime after the clock was carved. And I believe it was ... moredone right after carving, it was painted with silver and gold leaf paint. The paint shows age consistent with the age of the set. Condition: Has seen in photos there is a split to each of the candle holders do to the wood drying out. There are a few inactive worm holes on all three pieces but very hard to see. As seen in photo# 2 the horns of the Chamois have been broken off. Someone with a little carving skill could easily repair them. There also has been a repair to the Chamois horn seen in photo# 9. I will take great care in wrapping and packing this clock and if shipping is less than my estimate I will refund the difference.

This is a circa 1900-1920. Black Forest nutcracker featuring a man with a cap resting on his elbows. The nutcracker has an 8" horizontal length with a 4" height. Larger nuts can be cracked using the back position and smaller ones using the mouth. There is some light wear due to use. This is a rare figural with the man resting on his elbows.
