The elaborate markings on their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of high rank and social status. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. The figure finely balanced and the well-finished surface reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. This figure was used as an ancestor figure or a spirit of other world. In fact. Baule carved figures are known generally as waka sran, meaning a"person of woodâ. Such sculptures have multiple purposes and uses. They fall into two categories, the first represents the spirits of the wild(Asie Usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries. I hauled this out of the basement of an old home, and it is showing some age ... morewear, most notably with a couple slices out of drawer faces. There is slight pull away of the dovetailing on the bottom, but I think you could probably carefully tap it back into place. The previous owner did a very slap-up job of putting a dark stain on it, so the finish is somewhat inconsistent, you can see the oak in places inside, and there are faint watermarks on top, but I honestly love the look and character of this piece, and it's completely solid and functional. All four metal sliders are still inside, though they are a little stiff/rusty. Measures about 16" x 13 1/2" x 9 1/2".

Crack in one side of head and face, Additional Information: This well used sculpture is out of the ordinary when measured to the mainstream of Dogon art. There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elderâs house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as âgoruâ. The figure has a manâs beard and a womanâs breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. The Peopleâs Republic of the Congo and into Gabon. Teke artistic activities are directed primarily to the carving of figures intended to have magical substances. Known as Bonga, attached to them. Often called âfetishesâ in the West these powerful figures have different titles according to their purpose and who owns them. For example figures known as Matomba prevent and cure illnesses and other figures identified as nkira ntswo, represent ancestors and were used during a ritual to propitiate nature spirits. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! Constructed of beautifully grained wood, they measure 6 1/2" X 5 1/4" X 4" The tops are hinged and the boxes have dovetail joints. In very good, used and vintage condition, there is a hairline stress crack beginning to form on one of the box tops. This can be seen in the pictures. There was once something a word or number painted on the front of this piece. But all that’s left of that is one partial silver letter. Vintage set of 2 similar all wood boxes. Each measures approximately 10" long. 5 1/2" wide and 4 1/2" tall. Each has dovetailed joints and a metal sliding thing inside to keep the contents tight and organized. This is the perfect size for recipes or other 3"x5" cards. Hinges and metal slides all work perfectly. The first box(one on the left) is heavier and appears better made. It is stamped on the inside: NO. 7520-285-3145. Merchants Box Co. OCT 23, 1961" This box is in very good condition and is quite heavy. It has a felt covered bottom. It does have significant scratching on one side(see picture) The second box is stamped: No. 7310-C Peerless Tray" with a"Globe Wernicke" sticker on the end. Upon research. It appears that this box is much older, possibly from the 1930s or earlier. It also has ... morescratches to the finish and has a broken piece on one side and the hinges are a little off making the lid sit slightly crooked when closed. 9 photos uploaded hoping you can tell more about this vintage. Dovetail box. It measures approximately 8 1/2 inches across, 6 inches top to bottom and 4 1/2 inches front to back. It came with the alphabetical dividers you will see in one of the photos. It has the curved top on the bottom of the hinged top and the same on the top of the bottom. Up for auction is a vintage oak wood index card box or recipe box recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It features factory finger joint dove tail construction. It has its original a- z index tabs. A bit bent with signs of acidic paper, the acid and age appear almost 40s, possibly 30s. Wonderful country kitchen accessory or great for anyone who uses index cards for organization. Perfectly fits an index card or recipe card. Great old box. The top crack looks like it is along the seam, the bottom crack is not- possible candidate for repair. Looks like it may have been refinished at some point in the past, golden oak. With a stain on the bottom an paint splotches on one side corner, easy removal. Wonderful box that could be repurposed without any cards. Best of luck in bidding.
