Anthony Gianelli grew up in a poor but pious family in a small farming village near Genoa. Italy. The owner of his family farm paid for Anthony's seminary education because he was such a promising student. He was very young for ordination and required a special dispensation, however he was ordained in 1812 and served as a parish priest, and eventually founded several religious communities, some of them short-lived. So I'll tell you all I know, gathered from family history, research, and running it by a friend that is an antiques expert: This is a reliquary of Saint Gaetano(Saint Cajetan of Thiene. Or as it says on it, s. Gajetani Th. that my paternal Grandfather brought to America when he arrived in c.1920. Saint Gaetano(October 1, 1480- August 7, 1547) is the patron Saint of gamblers, workers and the unemployed, amongst ... moreother things. He helped found the Theatines. He is recognized by the Catholic Church as a Saint and his feast day is August 7th. Family history says that my Grandfather's brother. A Priest back home in Italy, gave it to my Grandfather when he set sail for America. The wax seal, two threads holding it together& to the reliquary, and the original ribbon are all present. It contains a piece of maroon garment. The reliquary appears to be bronze with a lovely old patina, and measures approx. 1 1/8" x 7/8" This reliquary is old and it looks old! Basically.
