Chalkware Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette at Grotto Wall Plaque Columbia? This was my grandmother’s and is over 50 years old. I am having to part with some things right now. So I am offering this chalkware relief plaque of the Virgin Mary appearing to St. Bernadette in the grotto at Lourdes. Rare piece. Measures 9” X 7” X 1” There are some chips and these have been photographed. There is penciled writing on the back that may indicate the place of manufacture, but I cannot read it. A friend of my grandmother’s brought this back to her from Italy. It may be Columbia, but I cannot see a mark. Brief story of Lourdes taken from the internet site of Medjugorje USA- A series of events which began in 1854 changed Bernadette’ s family's lives. Her father had been a well of miller. Bernadette’ s father was falsely accused of stealing two ... moresacks of flour and was imprisoned for many days. There was a drought which lasted for two years and drastically affected the wheat harvest and work at the mill. And finally. The steam mills that resulted from the Industrial Revolution put Francois' mill out of business, and he was out of work. The family was reduced to living in a one-room dwelling called the Cachot, which was formerly used as a jail. During this same period Bernadette contracted cholera. The high fevers caused her to suffer physically the rest of her life. She suffered emotionally also. She felt the heart ache of being excluded as people pointed to her family as the ones who live in the Cachot. Her physical illnesses prevented her from going to school. At age 14 she spoke only the dialect of Lourdes. She was unable to read or write or speak French, and the Catechism was taught in French only. She went to Mass, but she was not allowed to receive Holy Communion with her friends. Sometimes Bernadette's only comfort was her mother's love. Later, Fr. According to tradition, a Christian saint and virgin, who was martyred in the early 4th century at the hands of the pagan emperor Maxentius. According to her hagiography, she was both a princess and a noted scholar, who became a Christian around the age of fourteen, and converted hundreds of people to Christianity. Over 1,100 years following her martyrdom, St. Joan of Arc identified Catherine as ... moreone of the Saints who appeared to her and counselled her. The Orthodox Church venerates her as a Great Martyr, and celebrates her feast day on 24 or 25 November(depending on the local tradition) In the Catholic Church she is traditionally revered as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Antique St Antoine Padoue Agate Copper Brass Plaque Saint Anthony Catholic Icon
This beautiful. Old wall hanging plaque was purchased from an antique store and is sold as found. It measures 7" x 3 3/4" The backing is brass. I believe the stone to be agate, but not certain. The image is engraved silver-plate on copper. The silver-plate has aged patina and wear, exposing the copper. It is very ornate, marked: St Antoine de Padoue and is artist signed in lower right corner(as seen in photos) The light green stone has breakage, cracks all the way through, chips, natural imperfections, etc. The brass backing also has tarnished/aged patina, wear, scratches, etc. It appears to have had a stand that has been broken off. It is still a great piece even with it's flaws and blemishes. the imperfections just add to it's antique charm. Please view all photo images and ask any questions.
