The figure is carved in a hard stone and depicts a Chinese guardian lion. Commonly known as a Foo Dog. It shows wear consistent with the early 18th century. And is quite possibly much older. It has a superb worn patina including chips and a general“smoothing” of the features. It is beautifully hewn with a rough surface texture which sets in relief the chiseled lines of the eyes. Mouth and nose. The figure measures 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches deep by 6.5 inches high. Its petit size makes it unusual and collectible. It was originally collected in Shan Xi Province. China many years ago. It would make a great collector’s piece and is guaranteed authentic. This type of older stone can no longer be exported from China and would make a superb addition to any collection of Chinese antiques. Art or scholar’s objects. Their appearance in Buddhist religious art in China is found as early as 208 BC. Where it was believed the Foo Lion was a protector of the Dharma, or Buddhist teachings. Lions were never indigenous to China, but were once quite common in neighboring India. Used by Chinese literati as a desktop object of inspiration, elegantly depicting the Chinese Lotus(lian hua) a significant symbol, as one of eight precious things in Buddhism, representing purity of the body, speech, and mind, rising out of the muddy swamp, settled in its sublime position as the'Gentleman of Flowers' xxxxx Produced by a master craftsman of the late Qing Dynasty. The carving is delicately rendered in the form of an aquatic Lotus plant as it would appear growing out from the mud, pure and unstained, portraying the lotus root(qiang lian cai) on one side, sprouting with extended tentacles in a snailshell swirled motif, while the reverse is intricately modelled with a pair of adolescent lotus blossoms emerging out from the mother root at the base. Realistically carved from a solid piece of Rose Quartz of an even tone, with aged patina, measuring 3.50 inches(8.99cm) in length, without the stand. I knew early on I wanted to be an artist but didn't actually begin trying out different media until I was almost 30. Soon after I got married in fact. We had a tiny 700 square foot apartment in Virginia Beach, VA. and I began filling it with art materials-plaster, clay, concrete, etc. I tried my hand at live body casting, I made a plaster mold out of anything and anybody that would sit still. I made a few concrete sculpture, messed around in clay, etc. On a trip to Italy in Naples we took a trip up the mountain of Capodimonte to go to the museum but were sidetracked by the many artists up there working live in their tiny dusty studios. Most of them making realistic flowers. They worked so fast and made it look so easy! As soon as I got home I bought a bag of clay and began trying to make a flower. It literally took me about a year to ... moremake anything that even slightly resembled a flower, there is a real skill to making something that resembles anything in the real world! At any rate we moved to Japan and I didn't have time to work on my art due to my government job. I did. However, travel around a lot and while in China I was introduced to Lingbi, scholar's stones or scholar's rocks, in Japan Suiseki or viewing stones, aka Gongshi, in other words natural stones dug from various riverbeds and lakes(in China) or just found stones that have been polished and shaped by eons of time, flowing of water, etc. A man told me in China-Poor people collect gold, rich people collect stones! In China, the most sought after and collected objects are stamps, coins and stones, or so I have been told. At any rate, various artists over the years have attempted to replicate what God has done in the carving of these amazing natural artifacts. I am simply another foolish artist in that line, attempting to create some semblance of a lingbi. The most contorted, twisted, tortured, fantastical lingbi are breathtaking and amazing, bearing resemblance to many things if you stare, look at it from different angles and let your im
