Antique Chinese Carved Bone on Wood Panel UNUSUAL AND RARE
This auction is for a wooden panel with applied rectangles made of ox bone which has been carved into a gorgeous scene of dragons.Phoenixes, mountains, water, trees, and clouds surrounded by a border with an intricate flowing motif. The Chinese are reknowned for their intricate carvings, but on this piece the carving has been done on small bone panels which have been applied to the wood. This piece is very unusual and the quality of the carving is high. the aged bone has a delicate patina. It appears that this panel was once a door to a piece of furniture(perhaps a cabinet) because of the rabbeted edge(see photo) This does not affect the appearance of the piece from the front. There are no hinge marks or screw holes. There is a keyhole hanger on the back so it is ready to hang on the wall. I don't know the age of this piece. But I would ... moreguess it to befrom the late 19 th to the early twentieth century. The wooden panel has been painted to match the bone; this was probably done when the panel was removed from the piece of furniture it was a part of. Any screw holes from hinges were probably filled and painted over at this time; therefore I believe the paint to be much newer than the piece itself. There are two small nicks on the very edge at the top and top left corner(see photos) but they are very small and and do not detract from the overall appearance. Otherwise. Offered for sale is this exquisite antique Chinese framed carved wood and bone panel. It was probably from a cabinet. The piece depict raised carved wood and bone birds, butterflies and flowers. The frame measures 12-1/8" x 5-3/8" x 3/8"thickness and the inside panel is 10-5/8" x 3-3/4" It is heavy for its size, it weighs 11.6 oz(329 gm) The carved inlaid wood seems boxwood. Don't know what kind of wood to made of the frame and inside panel, both have beautiful grain. The white carving seems like bone or other material. The piece is in excellent condition except one bird's beak missing, and the frame have been re-glued, please see picture#10, but nothing wrong on front. Offered for sale is this hand carved high relief gold gilt on red wood panel circa 1900. It has 2 minor chips. One is at the center and the other is at the edge on left. Overall condition is in very good condition. The flaws don't detract the beauty of this piece. The piece has a appraisal stamp of Canton province on black edge, I believe it is an official seal of Canton. The panel measures 15-3/4"W x 6-1/4"H x 1-1/4"Thickness and the carving is 13-7/8"W x 4-7/8"H. It is a beautiful piece. I ship internationally. Old Chinese Carved Wood Panel - May Be Opium Bed Panel - Wall Decor
This carved wood panel is approximately 26" high. 9 1/2" wide and 1 1/4" deep, and has a gold paint over what looks like red from the look of the sides. I was told by the owner that it came from an antique store in Tucson. AZ, and that they were told it was an antique bed panel from an opium den in China. It does look old, and it appears a piece of thin wood was applied as a backing to the carved area. It seems to be in pretty good condition, although there is a crack in the upper left corner of the carving that is clean and looks rather old. Antique 19th Century Chinese Red & Gold Carved Wood Panel Vines Birds Flowers
Here is an exceptionally beautiful. Lyrical Chinese wood carved panel in a design of vines, birds, and flowers. The panel design is a rhythmic, never ending pattern of scrolling and interlacing foliage which is a very ancient arabesque style, dating many hundreds of years ago. The Chinese culture pays homage to the past by repeating ancient masters and styles, and I assume this curvilinear pattern has a similar history. I believe it also represents a courtly decorative style of Chinese art. I estimate the date of this carvingl to be the 19th century or earlier. An Asian art dealer would know its true age and origins. This graceful wood panel is painted or lacquered red on the raised border and the back board. Both of which frame the beautiful carving. The gilt or gold paint was used on the curled vines and the two birds, with flower centers ... moreleft red which may be the color under the gold. The panel measures 19 1/2 inches long(49.5 cm) 9 1/4 inches wide(23.5 cm) and 1 3/4 inches deep(4.5 cm) The panel weighs 1 pound 8 ounces(692 grams) I purchased this panel as part of a large set at a Butterfield's auction in San Francisco about 25 years ago. Condition: Most of the nicks or chips are in the frame and those have achieved an aged patina. The actual carving is remarkably in tact except for some hairline cracks and a small missing piece of vine in the upper right corner. Photos show condition. The carving has greater depth by being raised up from the back board and one of the little supporting pegs is missing. Since it is under the carving it can't be seen from most angles. It has a spot in the lower right side that the wood is darker than other places, I do not want to disturb the originality/quality of the piece, so I left alone. Chinese carved wood panel, probably Qing Dynasty.
This roughly carved panel measures 10 inches wide. 9 1/2 inches high and about 3/8 inch thick, but tapering near edges. There are four relaxed and engaged figures, a part of a large house, and a much curving tree. There is a crack across the width near the center which does not cut across any figures. The panel is still strong and the wood is tough. Ships well packaged free. This panel appears to be Qing Dynasty and slightly later.
