The gesso pieces at the top on either side of the bells were probably a later addition, one cracked in half and fell off, it's been glued back together and reattached. Personally. I'd remove both, as I think they detract from the frame. Gold trim on frame appears to have been repainted/regilded at some point. There are small spots of loss to the gold/gesso; as shown. This is a beautiful Japanese painting. There is a ceramic bell in the shape of a pig for the year of the pig from the twelve zodiac signs in Chinese astrology. The"showa" period is from 1926-1989 but this is at least 20 years old. It is painted on a paper board called"shikishi" This is in excellent condition but it is vintage so there are imperfections. There are"dots" on the paper board which are related to its age. This would be perfect for decorating it on the wall at home. It measures 24cm(9.4 inches) wide x 27cm(10.6 inches)long. There's some gold paint missing right on the bottom edge of the bell, probably skipped during manufacture. It has the original Josef Originals foil label on the back and a Japan label on the bottom. "Weavers of Speech" Limited Edition Metal Tray...Copy of Bell Co. Painting
This tray is a copy of a painting first issued in a Bell System Ad in Dec. 1915 that appeared in several magazines. The ad was written by a writer of the N.W. Ayer Advertising Agency. That agency also found the artist. Mr. T. D. Skidmore. The picture was in such demand that at one time Bell System distributed enlarged color copies of it. The original painting stills hangs in one of the conference rooms at 195 Broadway in NYC. This measures 14.5” across x 11.5” high and 1” deep. The gold trim has some small rust spots and the picture has some surface scratches and 1 very small dent. If this was to be displayed on a wall or in a cabinet it would not be too noticeable. Cecil Crosley Bell, Signed Oil on Masonite Painting titled "Toddler"
This is a lovely. Framed oil on masonite painting of a toddler with a bottle. It was painted by Cecil Crosley Bell(b 1906- d 1970) who is a well known second generation Ash Can school artist. It is signed lower right. Bell was a student of famed Artist and Teacher, John Sloan. Starting in the early 30's Sloan and Bell maintained a close relationship for many years. Sloan's father in law would perform heart surgery on Bell in the mid 1950's. This painting was painted during one of Bell's many summer visits to Rutland, Vermont. The painting framed measures 10 1/2 inches x 8 1/2 inches. Bell's work can be found in many major museums throughout the US, including the Metropolitan Museum Of Art.
