A variety of women's hairpin styles were recorded in ancient documents, including hairpins, hair clasps, buyaos(hairpins with pendants) and gold flowers etc. Way back in the Neolithic Age. Women began to use jewelry like hairpins. I have read that in the feudal society, wearing a hairpin would symbolize a girl’s coming of age. And a hair-pinning ceremony would be held to mark the occasion. In ancient times, a hairpin was also a symbol of personal dignity. Chinese ornate hair arrangements were adorned with many different kind of hairpins made of many materials- bone/silver/gold/kingfisher feather inlays and of course. Jade. Buyao was another important piece of hair jewel for ancient women. It was a variation of a hairpin or hair clasp. A typical buyao was a hairpin adorned with movable flower branch-shaped pendants. It would constantly shake with the wearer's steps. Hence the name"buyao" literally meaning"shake as you go" Most buyaos were made of gold into the shape of a dragon or phoenix and adorned with pearls and jade. There are a total of five jade hair ornaments in my private collection. Some of these jade ornaments had a small hole/holes from which there must have been a dangle decoration. Looks like the metal may be silver plated gold. Brass or.but not sure of the base metal. And the form at the base holding the jade, looks like a dragon in No: 1/2 and 3. Pair Antique Hair Ornaments Chinese Art Nouveau Kanzashi Style w/ Maker's Mark
Pair of beautiful antique hair ornaments with fine detail of what look like lotus blossoms and frog on water lily They are Kanazshi style hair ornaments. I believe from China since the one with the frog on it has a maker's mark of a square reserve- 4 dots within a square. The metal appears to be brass and there are small opal like stones in the one without the frog. The one with the frog has some damage on the back side of it with an old repair- see photos. Each ornament approx 5" long, and"heads" of ornaments approx 1 1/4" wide. Wonderful pieces of art!

Vintage Hat Pins or Hair Ornaments This is a lot of two unusual vintage pins which I think were either hatpins or hair ornaments. The 4" pin has a long sparkly prism glass top with gold-color indented circles at its base. There is a small chip one one side at the base where it meets the metal of the pin(see last close-up picture) but it does not detract. The second pin is shaped like a giant sewing needle and is a little bit less than 3" in length. Two sparkling rhinestone studded balls dangle from the eye of the needle. Really lovely! Two antique silver hair ornaments from central Asia. They are 2 3/4" long by 1 3/8" in diameter at the bulge and the other is 2 1/2" by 1 1/4" at the bulge. They have dents in them. The silver is relatively soft and not real thick. These were used in a necklace during the ethnic style of the 1960's and I took them off the necklace that I got when it went out of style. Beautifully haunting and rare Maiko(apprentice) Geisha Nishi doll. Complete with summer okobi(shoes) heavy traditional Maiko kimono layers and hair ornaments. Unlike most Nishi Geisha, this rare maiko geisha has black lacquered and decorated summer okobi having painted flowers on both sides. This maiko is fashioned as though she comes from a very wealthy okiya and is prepared to walk through the streets of Kyoto after a fresh summer rain. In her left hand she holds up her sleeve while her right hand has pulled up the layers of her outer kimono and tucked them beneath the tie over her Darari obi. Magnificent colors of cherry red. Black, white, yellow, metallic gold, metallic bronze and light green are seen in her clothing as well as some of the flowers in her hair. The metal strips of her Bira-bira Kanzashi hair ornament(fluttering or dangling ... morestyle) move freely and delicately. She is such a delicate yet striking figure. Her silk face. Hands, hair flowers and kimono need cleaning. Some of the silk on the knuckles and thumb of her right hand is deteriorating but does not detract from her beauty and is only noticable on close inspection. She stands 16 inches above her lacquered platform and is an absolute treasure even in her current state. Although her Nishi sticker is long gone from the top of her platform. The bottom side is covered in red felt so that it doesn't scratch surfaces and the felt is stamped inside of a rectangular box"MADE IN JAPAN" She is circa 1950s. The second ornament consists of two umbrellas also mounted on tiny springs; a row of silver dangles, and two tiny bells; one hanging from each umbrella. I must say. These little ornaments have been very difficult to photograph! They are MUCH prettier in person. One of the reasons is that they never stop moving, and therefore many of the photos that would have been good were blurry. Some of these are slightly blurry because they are in motion. It seems like they would have to be perfectly still for half an hour at least to get them to stop moving! These are delightful. Irreplaceable pieces of Japanese history. Originally, I had found only the"fans" ornament of this pair of antique Japanese Kanzashi ... morehair ornaments among my grandmother's collection of Asian treasures. Only after the"Japanese fans" kanzashi hair ornament was listed, was it's twin, the ornament with two umbrellas, found inside an old jewelry box at the bottom of one of my grandmother's old trunks. Both are exquisite"kanzashi" hair ornaments) with shaking, dangling, tinkling moving parts which are referred to as"bira-kanzashi" or"bira-bira" These two delightful hair ornaments have all the"bells and whistles" they each have a shimmering row of dangles, which seem to be either silver or a silver alloy. The"kanzashi" or dangles, are all intact, although due to age some of them are slightly bent, which can be corrected by careful manipulation. Older pieces two flat bows with sequins and some faux pearls. Two small gold tone and rhinestone hair pins, a funky barrette style stand up mini tiara- silvertone metal with rhinestones and a silvertone bow barrette with rhinestones. Aqua faux pearl barrette- very 60s looking and a large metal and rhinestone piece upper left- quite glamorous. The metal on the mini tiara has some oxidation but the stones are clear and bright- what a great fun and funky look. The largest piece- the flat pink sequin bow is about 3.25 inches across- that gives you some perspective on the size of the other pieces.
