Oriental Chinese Silver Metal Inkwell - Buddha & Temple
Large& heavy silver metal oriental inkwell. This would have been used to rest a inkbrush or pen on it and also would have held a little ink in the'well' It measures 148mm x 99mm& weighs approximately 0.82kg. It is decorated down the sides with dragons. At the top is the entrance to a temple. There is a round piece with a buddha that is used to hide the inkwell when not in use. This is an old antique 19th Century beautifully carved pair of wood high relief pierced panels from high end estate. One panel is 16 1/4" by 6" and has a battle scene and other panel is 16 1/4" by 6 1/4" and has a 11/4" hook on top and it is a celebration scene. The celebration scene panel has black enamel paints chips on top left and bottom right corners. The battle scene panel on the back side corners look different like it came off of something. Beautifully done carving with great detail and dimension. a butterfly hovers at the top right, birds share(or fight over) a berry, and others perch lightly in the blossoming tree. The panel is mounted on an acrylic sheet for stability and ease of display with holes that can hold picture wire. The gilt finish has worn away in areas to the red gesso underneath and t here are some cracks and clear losses to the carving; several branches have broken. Mostly from the upper right hand quadrant. Rare Vintage Chinese Camphor Wood Hand Carved Muyu Buddhist Temple Wood Drum
Here's a very large Chinese hand carved solid camphor wood buddhist temple muyu or wood drum. When you hit this hollowed out drum with a stick. It makes a loud noise that echos through a large room such as the grand hall of a temple. It is painted red and has carvings of some Chinese characters. Item was acquired at the estate of a Chinese antiques collector in Los Angeles, California, who traveled to China during the 1980's and brought this back to the US, but the muyu is much older. It comes with its original wooden stick. It has a camphor wood scent that comes from inside the muyu. It has an old surface patina that only comes with age. Possibly a temple lion, not sure what its made from, looks like a rusty metal but on closer inspection a brass colour is showing through in places and signs of gold gilt can also be seen, so im guessing this might be an early bronze piece, viewing best option otherwise selling as unknown metal and unknown age, my opinion would be 1700-1800s, surely a very rare piece which displays well. it measures about 17.8cm high, 18.5cm long and it weighs just under 1kg. it came with more rare pieces ill be listing. Up for auction is another estate item which is lovely and in great condition. It is a camphor wood Chinese carving of a young Buddha child riding a unicorn. The carving is very well executed and details are superb. We were told it was mid to late 19 cent by family member of the estate but I couldn't find anything in my research. Sorry.
