For auction here is a very fine early Chinese hardwood jar or vase lid or cover carved and pierced in a superbly executed openwork design of chilins. Scrolls and ruyi relief carved symbols in very fine details. This lid or cover was produced most likely in Canton, China in the late 1700s to the very early 1800s designed to top a wonderful porcelain or jade jar or vase most likely. This cover is of a very high standard starting with the top having a acanthus leaf type ring with an empty center showing pairs of opposing Chilins surrounded by a complicated and very skillful display of forwards, backwards and upsidedown scroll design ending on top of a wide outside rim decorated with a continuous ruyi style in raised relief. This stand was produced in China most likely in the area of Canton during the mid 19c to display a large shell. PAIR ANTIQUE CHINESE CARVED HARDWOOD STANDS FOR PORCELAIN VASES OR CARVINGS
For your consideration we have here a hard to find pair of antique Chinese carved hardwood display stands in an attractive medium brown coloring in wonderful condition which were produced in China some time in the first half of the 1900s although they appear much newer but I guarantee these are legitimate older stands which have the older delicate legs and turned feet. This pair of stands have had many similar styles made today as these display antique porcelains. Carvings and cloisonne pieces so well and because of the delicate nature of the legs many did not survive but the newer copies always have heavier designed undersides now and simply do not have that good antique appearance. The top has a raised turned center with a shaped top edge and a concaved collar sitting on a apron or skirt nicely shaped with pierced slots with all edges having ... moreraised lines. All four legs are shaped in the cabriolet style terminating into upturned feet with scrolled sides and a shaped stretcher for strength and design. Condition of both stands are excellent with just light surface wear but no chips, cracks, losses or problems I can see of any type and actually both stands appear to be made from the same piece of wood as you can almost match up exactly the two skirts in the first photo of the wood grain. For auction is presented a good antique/vintage Chinese carved hardwood plate stand with a raised relief ruyi designed front and bottom stretcher and a full openworked back stand. This stand was produced in China sometime around the mid 1900s for the export market and would have been used for displaying small to medium sized plates. Trays or small type chargers. The stand sits on four scrolled feet having a raised ruyi to the center of the front with a scroll to each side and another pair of ruyi designs on the bottom stretcher facing each other and the back stand is fully openworked with more scrolling and a lotus flower in the center and the hardwood is of a pleasing reddish/brown color with a nice finish and patina and is one of the more quality stands of its type I have had for some time. Condition is excellent with only some light rubbing ... moreto the top of the rear stand where the plate would have laid against it and some other light wear to the groove for the plate otherwise perfect. Sizes: Height to back stand 7" x Width of front 5-1/4" x Depth from front to back 3-3/4" x Groove for plate thickness 1/4" at the outside ends and 1/2" in the center. I would say this stand would nicely hold a plate or similar up to a 8" or so and would display a early piece of porcelain wonderfully. Antique Chinese Pierced Hardwood Pedestal Large Size-From Famous Hawaii Estate
Remarkable survivor. This stunning pedestal belongs in a museum holding a priceless vase or sculpture! From the famous"Marks Estate- Nuuanu, Oahu Hawaii auction. The household was full of beautiful sculptures and vases, that sold for many thousands of dollars at the auction. Somehow, all the pedestals and burl bases were tossed in a box, and sent outside to a garage area, where I won them at the end of the auction in box lots. I've nothing so big to display on this beautiful piece, so I'm offering it here for your bidding consideration! It's almost 11 inches wide at its widest exterior points. The inner drop in area on the top, is 6& 15/16 inches from edge to edge, and the largest item it could hold entirely is 8& 7/8 inches. From the bottom of its feet, to the top lip, it stands 1&7/8 inches tall. The scrollwork ... morewas done by a true artisan, painstakingly pierced/cut in, an you can see each individual scrape and tool cut inside the scrolls. Amazing, this large pedestal is ONE SOLID PIECE OF WOOD. As a woodworker, I can truly appreciate the time and difficulty in creating a piece like this, let alone, doing it without power tools as I'm sure this was done! There is one hairline fracture that could use a little wood glue, that I've indicated with the sharpie. It does not effect the strength, or structural integrity in any way. Also, obviously the finish could use some Danish oil or bees wax to help protect the wood, but I've left it in its ORIGINAL CONDITION, and it's up to the new owner how they want to treat it. RARE 19C CHINESE CARVED AND PIERCED OVAL HARDWOOD STAND W OPENWORK DRAGON DESIGN
For auction we have here a superb and seldom seen style and shape of a 19c Chinese hardwood display stand finely carved and pierced with the top performed in a openwork style depicting a dragon amoungst scrolls. This stand was produced in China during the second half of the c1800s and appears that it could have been used for a similar shaped censor or an object having four feet and today it can be used for the same type item or a object containing a flat oval foot rim. The stand is worked from one solid piece of dense and dark hardwood with an even darker coloring put on to give it a ebonized look and has taken on a wonderful surface patina and sheen. The top being in a oval shape with the center area performed in a openwork design depicting a dragon twisting around amoungst scrolls with a smooth boarder having four shallow foot indents and ... morethe outside edge done in a continuous raised relief bead design with a short collar underneath having nice patterned shaped piercings on top of the skirt or apron finished in another good openwork effort having four ruyi style knee and bottom foot separated by alternating panels of scrolling with all being chased with raised outlines. The underside is smooth and well finished with the condition overall being excellent with no chips. Cracks, losses or repairs only having some wear to the dark surface finish to the top and a bit on the outside edges otherwise the stand is about as good as you get for this age. For auction is a superbly crafted Old Chinese hardwood display stand carved and pierced in a unique openwork design in a pleasing medium to dark brown color. This stand was produced in China sometime around the early 1900s and was most likely exported to the West. This is the only one of this type I have had and would be great for a taller more slender item or one that could use some elevation. The top is flat with a diameter for the objects foot of right at 3" and has a nice raised outside lip with the lip's edge having a Greek key treatment which sits flat against a bold skirt with four legs splitting into a pair of feet at the end having alternating openworked areas of acanthus leaves. Two beautifully carved Chinese hardwood lids for ginger jars from the estate of a major and well-known Asian arts collector. Both have damage. The lid on the right has an outside diameter of 4 1/8" and and inside diameter of 3 3/8" It's 2" tall to the top of the finial. It has a spot of loss seen in the 6th photo. And both sides of the bottom rim have been glued. The lid on the right is much darker wood and is stamped CHINA in the wood. It is 4 3/8" and the diameter of the rim where it sits on the jar 2 7/8" measuring to the outside rim and stands 2 3/4" tall to the top of the finial It has two checks in the wood and loss to the piercing, shown in the last two photos. This 5 legged 6 lb. pierced and carved display table/stand is a quality hardwood. SUPERB C1900 CHINESE CARVED & PIERCED HARDWOOD STAND FOR PORCELAIN VASE OR JAR
Offered today we have a superbly crafted early c1900s Chinese carved and pierced hardwood display stand in a nice larger size having a deep reddish brown coloring and a rich surface patina. This stand was produced in China around the turn of the century or c1900 to c1920s most likely designed to hold a larger porcelain vase. Urn or jar. This is a well received design with many great points of interest starting with the top where the object's foot rests which has a combination of raised circles and the outside rim's edge is done in a continuous bead design with a low collar that sits upon a very attractive five section skirt or apron with each section being separated by five legs. The skirt sections are nicely pierced and carved replicating scrolls and vine combinations and the legs start out with a out turned area then travel inward ... morecurling up and terminating into a chilong head with a small round pad for the foot. The underside is also very attractive having a wheel shaped stretcher connected to each leg for both design and strength with the round center area filled in with a carved and pierced design similar to the skirting with another chilong(or baby dragon) in the center. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, losses or repairs just some light surface wear and a bit of dryness and dirt in the piercings on the skirt otherwise a wonderful stand. FINE ANTIQUE CHINESE HARDWOOD BASE STAND ZITAN WOOD? QING? LARGE 9 3/4" MORE PHOTOS BELOW. This auction is for a wooden Chinese base or stand. I have tried to research this piece and found it to be like those made of Zitan wood. I am not an expert though so I cannot identify the wood for certain. It is very dark with a lacquer on it. I have taken some photos for you to see the wood yourself. Under the lacquer it has a reddish tone. I did do a very brief water test and the piece sunk to the bottom. It does not float. This piece does have age. The piece has a slight oval shape. I believe this shrinkage is characteristic of an old Zitan piece, perhaps Qing although not sure. It measures from 7 3/4" inside the rim to almost 8" The full width of the piece, including the carved base is about 9 3/4" It is in good condition although ... morethe lacquer has come off some on the top and the edge of the rim has splintered a bit. Also, there is a split in the wood that runs from the top down to the side of one of the legs, and another smaller one on the opposite side. I have taken photos of these areas. Please see below. The legs themselves are good and the piece sits flat. There are no chips on the carved portion or legs, they are in nice condition. If you need more information to help determine the age or history of the piece. Please email me and I will do my best to answer. I purchased this at an estate of an heir of an elderly couple's estate. I do not know the history if the piece. I am happy to combine shipping.
