The bottom of the iron is stamped“China” and the end of the handle is wood. It likely dates from between 1890 and 1914. Irons like this were used in China to iron silk by putting hot coals in the bowl. It measures approx. 3 ¾ inches long with handle by 2 ¼ wide and stands 1 ¼ inches tall. The bowl portion is approx. 2 7/8 inches long across the top and the handle alone is 1 5/8 inches long. The iron is a solid piece in very good condition with a very tiny nick on the lip above the handle. Rare Set of 4 Antique Brass Silk Irons w/Dragons and Cinnabar Lacquer Handles
Collectors will be well aware. This is a rare excellent antique set of 4 Chinese silk irons from the late Qing Dynasty early Republic Period/ late 19th- early 20th century. The Chinese would place small hot embers into these antique brass irons/pan and draw the warmed pan over silk to smooth out wrinkles as well as for bed warming. Specifically on these silk irons. You see the brass'ember' bowls with the 2 dragons contesting a pearl in the center. You see the cinnabar lacquer handles with the carved floral design. Beautifully etched scrolls on sides of pan. Bottom has green felt- which is nice for display. There is patina and a little wax inside pan- I will try to clean this out before shipping. Interesting info found online- Before about the 10th century. Cloth was ironed with smooth wooden or glass pieces and a pounding stick. Heat was not used until the 16th century in Europe. By then, pressing irons were metal pans with long handles. A piece of charcoal was put in the pan to heat the bottom and the heated pan was rubbed over the cloth. This crude iron was gradually improved. Charcoal was replaced by a heated iron rod to avoid the charcoal ashes that ... moresometimes fell on the cloth. The brass bowls have graceful lotus-shaped rims and are embossed with a series of Lu characters against an allover geometric pattern. The handles are unusual and exceptionally fine. they are carved oxbone or similar. The handles can be removed from their holders. One is carved with a four-toed dragon circling the handle. Chinese Oriental Silk Coal Iron Enamel Brass Repousse Dragon Vintage Cloissone
Offered in this auction is a beautiful enameled brass Chinese Silk Coal Iron. An interesting historical item from a Florida estate. The handle is enameled with beautiful colors. The repousse brass bowl featuring Chinese dragons would polish up nicely, or the original patina could be maintained. The support piece on the bottom of the handle was to keep the iron from tipping. These unique irons are now used as conversation pieces and decorative accents. This one measures about 7" long, 2 3/t8" wide with the diameter of the bowl is about 3 1/4" Depth is about 2" The bottom is incised China. TThe Chinese silk industry used irons like these in the 1800's and early 1900's for pressing silk fabric. They sometimes came in pairs and the Chinese women would use them simultaneously. One in each hand! I used to collect antique ... morebox irons. flat irons and sad irons. I especially liked the irons you filled with coals. The earlier ones I had found were made of very heavy cast iron though. With this Chinese style. it was filled with hot coals and then moved across the silk fabric. Ive seen them shown in decorating magazines where they are in a bathroom filled with cotton balls or Q-tips, little soaps, etc. Another I saw in a living room on a table and another on a dresser, to store your small treasures like earrings or rings. Thank goodness we don't any longer resort to heating flat stones, putting hot coals in the box irons or heating a flat iron on a wood stove like my mother had to do when first married back in the 1940's. This is an antique Chinese Silk iron. Made in China(as is stamped) This came from an estate where the lady and her husband had an antique store in NY many years ago. This one. Since it has the cloisonne' in the bottom, appears to be made for decorative purposes. Originally a hot piece of coal was used to heat it for silk ironing. I could be incorrect, but I have not seen any others with the scene in the bowl area. The handle has a blue background with the cherry blossoms and the blossoms continue but are embossed to the outside of the bowl. There is a chip in the cloisonne' on the lower underside part of the handle which I have given a separate pic of. Hard to notice for display. The inside cloisonne' is an old steamer ship with a paddle wheel with no sign of wear. Really beautiful-slightly heavy. Just over 7" in length. ... more3 1/8" wide and 1 3/4" high. It has five silk lined drawers and the largest drawer has a tray inside of it that lifts out. On offer is an antique brass Chinese coal silk iron. Sometimes referred to as an ember holder, and occasionally as a cigarette valet. Intended to hold hot coals and used to iron silk adornments on clothing. This particular piece features an intricate cloisonné handle with a Chinese vessels motif. Held securely in place with a small foot below handle for stability. Vessel is adorned with 2 dragons and there is an additional"grotesque" style face where handle meets vessel. As you can clearly see, the top 1/4 of the handle is dented. I believe an experienced metalsmith could possibly fix this but I cannot guarantee it.
