The purpose of this statue is believed to be a scroll weight which makes sense due to the hefty weight for it's size. In the Ming dynasty the archaic forms was revisited from the Shang Dynasty and onward. The Han Dynasty was a bigger influence in the Ming Dynasty as is this jade carving is subjected after and made in the period from the 17th century-18th Century. If you look at this item number you will see a much more drab example similar to this one in this auction( 140987545842) I am being more reasonable and fair on the one that I am selling. SIZE: 4 1/2 inches long by 2 1/2 inches wide. By about 1 inch tall.CONDITION: Very Good condition, th ere are no chips. Cracks or repairs, just natural fissures that occur in any jade stone. Antique Chinese Ming Dynasty Porcelain Shard in Shadow Box
Antique Chinese Ming Dynasty underglaze blue and white porcelain shard depicting a deer framed in a silk lined shadow box. This shard was obtained in 1979 directly from local divers excavating in the Chao Phrya River. Near the ancient capital of Siam: Ayuddhya. It dates from the 1500's and represents early Chinese trade ware in Southeast Asia. The same potters in China later developed blue and white Cantonese and Nanking ware for export to Europe in 1700's and 1800's. But the bowl this shard represents is much more finely potted, indicating it was for the high end of the market. It measures 95 mm in diameter or nearly 4 inches. We have others available. And women's hair ornaments were more exquisite than men's. A variety of women's hairpin styles were recorded in ancient documents, including hairpins, hair clasps, buyaos(hairpins with pendants) and gold flowers etc. Way back in the Neolithic Age. Women began to use jewelry like hairpins. I have read that in the feudal society, wearing a hairpin would symbolize a girl’s coming of age. And a hair-pinning ceremony would be held to mark the occasion. In ancient times, a hairpin was also a symbol of personal dignity. Chinese ornate hair arrangements were adorned with many different kind of hairpins made of many materials- bone/silver/gold/kingfisher ... morefeather inlays and of course. Jade. Buyao was another important piece of hair jewel for ancient women. It was a variation of a hairpin or hair clasp. A typical buyao was a hairpin adorned with movable flower branch-shaped pendants. It would constantly shake with the wearer's steps. Hence the name"buyao" literally meaning"shake as you go" Most buyaos were made of gold into the shape of a dragon or phoenix and adorned with pearls and jade. There are a total of five jade hair ornaments in my private collection. Some of these jade ornaments had a small hole/holes from which there must have been a dangle decoration. Looks like the metal may be silver plated gold. Brass or.but not sure of the base metal. And the form at the base holding the jade, looks like a dragon in No: 1/2 and 3. WHOA! This is an extremely rare and exciting find! From very. Very old estate here in Houston that was not publicly advertised until after this was purchased. This estate was amazing-old money, old family with very,very high quality antiques. We didn't think about this piece, we just grabbed it as fast as we could! These were probably part of a set used on an alter of a temple. The only other candle sticks of this size and quality we have seen that also were made in sections are described as such-one pair is in the Victoria and Albert museum and the other pair sold for $288,839.35 USD at Woolley and Wallis. Those were blue and white and dated to the Qianlong Period but were the only others of this same size and construction. We love the remains of mutton fat on the top of this piece! What a wonderful thought to ponder.where this might ... morehave been and who might have gazed on it as the candle burned! Everything about it is perfect, from the elegant shape to the wonderful under glaze blue and over glaze enamels. The colors are fantastic! This is a very heavy piece. It has had a beautiful, caved wooden(zitan? base made for it and the top fitted piece is wood as well. You can see in the pictures how the sections were carefully, individually made and how they fit together. It is just an incredible example of early Chinese porcelain-we have NEVER seen another anything like it! It measures an impressive 27" tall(with stand) There is an over glaze Wanli mark on the bottom but it could be later. Excellent condition with fine crazing throughout and an old, barley notaceable glaze flake just above the top section divider. No cracks or repairs.
