Vintage toys, art, vintage folk art, vintage ethnic and semi precious beads, vintage jewelry, vintage silver and jade. Presenting from the collection I have presented many similar hair ornaments but this one is very large and elaborate. Designed in the shape of a Butterfly it is from the 1800s This piece measures 8" long and the top is 2 1/2" ... morex 2" The jade is pale and translucent light green and white and carved beautifully. Blue kingfisher feathers are used as accents The piece it put together with gold wire. The butterfly is so perfectly copied that is looks real. There is little information available describing how kingfisher feather‘enameling’ was actually undertaken during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However. A snippet from Mary Parker Dunning’s book Mrs Marco Polo Remembers. In which she recorded her travel experiences of 1908. Does describe the process. I bought a kingfisher pin. The foundation of the pin is cheap silver. Then the wonder worker. This absolutely beautiful. One-of-a-kind gold gilt wood Chinese Battle Scene demonstrates the skills and abilities of Chinese wood carving artisans in the 19th century. The carving was placed in the shadow box in the 1977 and as the photos indicate, it was sealed and thereby protected. Antique 19th Century Chinese Red & Gold Carved Wood Panel Vines Birds Flowers
Here is an exceptionally beautiful. Lyrical Chinese wood carved panel in a design of vines, birds, and flowers. The panel design is a rhythmic, never ending pattern of scrolling and interlacing foliage which is a very ancient arabesque style, dating many hundreds of years ago. The Chinese culture pays homage to the past by repeating ancient masters and styles, and I assume this curvilinear pattern has a similar history. I believe it also represents a courtly decorative style of Chinese art. I estimate the date of this carvingl to be the 19th century or earlier. An Asian art dealer would know its true age and origins. This graceful wood panel is painted or lacquered red on the raised border and the back board. Both of which frame the beautiful carving. The gilt or gold paint was used on the curled vines and the two birds, with flower centers ... moreleft red which may be the color under the gold. The panel measures 19 1/2 inches long(49.5 cm) 9 1/4 inches wide(23.5 cm) and 1 3/4 inches deep(4.5 cm) The panel weighs 1 pound 8 ounces(692 grams) I purchased this panel as part of a large set at a Butterfield's auction in San Francisco about 25 years ago. Condition: Most of the nicks or chips are in the frame and those have achieved an aged patina. The actual carving is remarkably in tact except for some hairline cracks and a small missing piece of vine in the upper right corner. Photos show condition. The carving has greater depth by being raised up from the back board and one of the little supporting pegs is missing. Since it is under the carving it can't be seen from most angles.
