FINE ANTIQUE CHINESE HARDWOOD CARVING SCHOLAR TIGER BEAUTIFUL CARVED STAND
Antique Chinese Wood Carving of Scholar and Tiger Cub This fine 19th or early 20th century hardwood carving came from a nice small local collection. Depicting a man quietly reading as a young tiger tries to get his attention.must have been a good book. The book is now lost. As is part of the scholar's left hand. The tiger has lost the end of his right ear and there are some splits and tiny losses to the sculpture in general. The base has twisted some with time and good use a shim under a foot. These apologies aside, this is a very unusual and fine carving. Different woods were used in the base and the sculpture. The base being a darker and heavier wood. The scholar and tiger are very heavy as well, but the wood is more reddish. HEIGHT on Base 11 1/4 inches(28 cm) WEIGHT 5 pounds( 2.2 Kilograms) I sell most of my items on eBay with a reasonable ... morereserve. Large. Old Chinese Hardstone Buddha Carving Description and Item Information Up for sale is this beautiful Chinese hardstone carving with a fitted wood stand. Please excuse the glare in the photos. The statue is made from a handsome piece of hardstone. Either sodalite or lazurite(lapis) or a combination stone. It depicts the reclined Buddha(Siddhartha Gautama) as he passes into nirvana. The figural carving is softly, sensitively, and artistically executed. The stand is also an objet d'art in itself. Including the stand, this item is approximately 9 inches tall, 14 15/16 inches long, and 4 1/4 inches wide. With the stand, it weighs just over 12 1/4 pounds. Alone, the hardstone statue is approximately 7 inches tall, 14 inches long, and 3 1/4 inches wide. The stone piece weighs about 10 1/4 pounds, unpacked. This would be a fine addition ... moreto a collection of Asian decorative arts. Identification This Chinese statue is unsigned. It is vintage or antique. But the exact age is not known. Condition The stone carving and its wooden stand look very good overall. With light wear. There are no chips or cracks to the stone. The wooden stand has no chips. It has minor finish wear, and there are scratches beneath the feet. Nearly parallel to the wood grain is a fine split which does not go all the way through. SUPERB LARGE CHINESE ANTIQUE HARDWOOD CARVING OF 'NINE DRAGONS' W FLAMING PEARL!
For auction we have here a fabulous and large antique Chinese carving in hardwood of a grouping of nine dragons including one huge one and eight more climbing all around with a centered rising flaming pearl of wisdom. This carving was produced in China sometime between the 1940s to the 1960s or 50 to 70 years old. I sold this carving about 15 years ago to a collector and recently I was offered this and some other items to buy back from the same collector and I had forgotten actually how nice this large carving was. Now. I have seen a number of pieces on the market that are similar and perhaps maybe 20 to 30 years old but this particular one is a fabulous work of art and the ones I have seen are just more for decoration as the quality of the carving is very basic and almost crude. The largest dragon runs the entire length and is so long that ... moreboth the fanned out tail and the dragons head wrap around to the front having wonderful scaling, feet, tail and face with the rest of the dragons showing all the same details with a large and impressive flaming pearl on the top center. The details on this piece are simply fabulous for such a large carving and the amount of time must have been great even for the talented carvers as the large dragon has hundreds of individual scales and there are nine dragons that received the same treatment and the tails are also splendid. The type of wood may be a species of rosewood or another similar hardwood as the color is of a mellow butterscotch tone with not being overly finished or lacquered as the surfaces are starting to show good age and patina. The finial or in this case would be the flaming pearl is removable and is a good size chunk of wood nicely carved as well with the actual pearl having more attention to the details on the front side than the back side and it also appears to stand on a grouping of clouds. Condition overall is excellent as there are no chips, losses, damage or repairs all there is are some long horizontal shrinkage/age splits that basically run just above the

Antique Chinese Hardwood Carving of a Woman Playing a Sheng on Stand
On offer is a delightful antique Chinese(late Qing) hardwood carving of a woman playing a traditional mouth blown reed instrument. With slender bamboo pipes, known as a'sheng' Exclusive of the new wood stand that she rests on. This carving stands 7.5" 19 cm in height. Not sure if the wood is Zitan but it is a very dense hardwood with an extremely fine grain and a beautiful reddish hue, very much like Zitan. The best I could get my local antique dealer to commit to on the question of whether or not this was rare Zitan wood was"Quite possibly… Weighs in at 779 gr. Head and hands are beautifully carved and then painted. Outstanding attention to detail. Note the hair(every strand crisply defined) The delicately carved and then painted facial features, the folds of her garment and the details of the sheng.
