The Book of Lilith by Barbara Black Koltuv. Ph.D. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 127 pages. Publisher: Nicolas Hays(1986) ISBN: 9780892540143. The Book of Lilith tells the story of Lilith. Who was really the first woman created by God, and who just happened to have been created before Adam. Her job is to give all the things in the world souls, while Adam's is to create rules and law out of chaos. Unfortunately, Adam likes to have sex with Lilith only in the Adam-on-top position. This leads to, shall we say, problems" The Book of Lilith is alternately funny, serious, surreal, and amazing as Lilith embarks on a Zen journey around the world giving things souls and giving birth to a god. It is more than a little bit deep, and yet very, very entertaining. Lilith’s demonic origins are found in Jewish folklore, her name and personality ultimately derived from a Babylonian-Assyrian demon named Lilit, or Lilu, though Lilith may have had an association with even earlier goddesses. In rabbinic literature Lilith is variously depicted as the mother of Adam’s demonic offspring following his separation from Eve, or as his first wife, who scoffed at him and left him because he insisted on the male-superior sexual position, the so-called“missionary” position. Three angels tried in vain to force her to return to Adam. Ultimately the more docile Eve was created for Adam as a replacement for Lilith. Refusing to couple with Adam. Lilith was said to have bred with demons, producing 100 offspring a day. Lilith appears in J.W. von Goethe’s“Faust” and Dante Gabriel Rosetti’s“Eden Bower” In the twentieth century, Lilith became something of a feminist symbol for her rebellion against patriarchal ways. Saggs. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 192 pages. Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press; 1995) ISBN: 0806127651. Babylon stands with Athens and Rome as a cultural ancestor of western civilization. It was founded by the people of ancient Mesopotamia. Who settled in the fertile crescent between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers before the fourth millennium B.C. Some of the earliest experiments in agriculture and irrigation, the invention of writing, the birth of mathematics and the development of urban life all began there. Biblical associations are also numerous, from Nineveh to the Tower of Babel and the Flood. In"Babylonians" H. W. F. Saggs describes the ebb and flow in the successive fortunes of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Amorites, and Babylonians who flourished in this region. Using evidence from pottery, cuneiform tablets, cylinder seals, early architecture and metallurgy, he illuminates the myths, religion, languages, trade, politics, and warfare, as well as the legacy, of the Babylonians and their predecessors. During the twentieth century. Collaboration by archaeologists from many nations has greatly increased the range of archaeological evidence, while work by linguists has gradually unlocked the secrets of the thousands of clay tablets recovered from the area. Today the historical record for some periods of ancient Mesopotamia is substantially better than for some centuries of Europe in the Christian era. Gaps and uncertainties remain, but Babylonians conveys a rich and fascinating picture of the development of this remarkable civilization from before the beginning of the third millennium B.C. CONDITION: Unblemished except VERY slight edge and corner shelfwear to dustjacket. Including a small(1/2 inch) closed, neatly mended edge tear to the front side of the dustjacket at the spine head. DESCRIPTION: HUGE hardcover in dustjacket w/magnificent color plates(199 pages) Metropolitan Museum of Art(1972) Composed in the tenth century by the poet Firdowsi. The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Court artisans and craftsmen continued their work on the 759 folios for the better part of two decades. As a consequence, the book offers a fascinating mixture of artistic styles. The extraordinary quality of the paintings was known even in Shah Tahmasp's time. One commentator wrote then of Sultan Muhammad's page representing"The Court of Gayumars" the boldest painters hung their heads in shame before it" While that superb image. Reproduced within the book in color and gold, is called by Stuart Welch"perhaps the greatest painting in Iranian art: others of the pages he has selected for color reproduction and special comment are clearly in the same area of merit.
