This Japanese Buddhist zushi. Or small shrine, appears to be 30-40 years old, and the figure on its inside depicts Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The depictions on the insides of the doors also seem to be Kannon. It appears to be made of steel that's been given a gold and black coating. Each portable house alter is tailored to the family that owns it, from what I understand about these pieces of art. The figures and box are hand made and painted. This gorgeous necklace features a Buddha. Prayer Shrine pendant, in a brass setting with inlaid lapis. It measures 2" long and the chain is about 18" around. It is at least 15 years old. But never worn. My boyfriend and I ran a curiosities shop in Laguna Beach. California for many years. When we left the business. We sold our entire inventory except for the jewelry. A lot of these pieces were made by various local artists from the 1960’s to the 1990’s using both new and recycled components. Centrally a seated Buddha on the decorative wood carving. Mounted into the shrine. Metal pierced decoration behind the Buddha. Wonderful portrayal with the areas of original colouring. Wooden shrine with the black lacquered finish which continues internally and to the seated buddha figure. Domed top. It has an ove rall height of about 12.75inches. There is a noticeable misprint under teh arched bridge. The dark blue is the same color as the dark blue used in the pond. Experts say that this is not fitting. The misprinting is corrected in later printings. This misprint shows that this print is a reproduction of the first edition. Print is approximately 14" x 10" Including border. It is printed on paper. There is no bleed through, so this isn't a wood block reproduction, but it also is not a poster or photographic reproduction. My best guess is that it is a lithograph from the 1970s.

1918 Triptych Shrine 83rd Wallajahbad Light Infantry WWI British Indian Army
Gilded Madao Triptych Enshrined From Nasik(Holy City) India c.1918 Very interesting old tri-part bas-relief shrine. Richly gilded in plaster behind glass. The central shrine contains Goddess& attendants. The narrower shrines on either side show a deity. Whats really interesting is this was carried during WWI by a lieutenant in the British Indian Army. 83rd Wallajahbad Light Infantry. His name, rank, and regiment written by hand in fountain pen, dated 1918. Old paper label attached years later describing the shrine, probably sold to a tourist in India decades ago. One narrow shrine is missing the glass cover. Plaster goddesses have hairlines and small chips. Measures 5-3/4" x 4-3/4" x 2-3/4" closed. Up for auction is a handmade stained glass altar with a beautiful antique tile. It is a serene and peaceful spriritual tribute. The reds are pretty and soothing. The wooden door is an antique. Also, and there is some wear on both the tile and the door. There is a tiny spot of cement in the middle of the tile, not noticeable. There is a large goldtone cross on the bottom part of the yellow stained glass that is 3" tall and a little more than 1.5" wide. The tile is 6" square. The entire altar is 14.5" by 7.5"

Up for auction is a handmade altar or spiritual tribute with stained glass behind the original clear glass door. The stained glass frames a gold wooden frame with a three dimensional statue of Jesus behind clear glass that is a replacement glass. The door opens and has a fastener. It is old and has some wear and repair. But is in overall good condition. It is peaceful and serene. The altar is 26" tall and is almost 15.5" wide. It is 4" deep. The stained glass is 9 1/4" tall by 7" wide. The gold frame is 8.5" tall by 6" wide. The inset panel with the statue of Jesus is 5 1/4" tall. The statue appears to be ceramic and has a dark brown antique pediment above it.

Antique Catholic Viaticum Communion Last Rites Altar Shrine Holy Family
This is an antique Catholic Last Rites Rector Viaticum(Latin for last provisions) from the early 1900s used for communion and anointing the sick and dying. Back in the day most people were treated for illness and died at home. Hospitals were not in widespread use and doctors and priests(Catholic and Anglican. And others) made house calls. It was fairly common for families to have such a"sick call shrine" to assist the priest in delivering the Sacrament to the sick and dying. The Holy Name Altar is one style of what is commonly called a Viaticum referring to the Bread of Life needed to make the journey to the afterlife. The Holy Name Altar was intended for ongoing devotions also and NOT just for times of illness or death. The box is made from solid oak with reverse hand-painted glass in beautiful shades of sky blue. Lavender, gold ... moreand red depicting two angels with a big cross on the top. The bottom reads"BLESSED BY THY HOLY NAME" Inside the box under this painted glass is a beautiful hand-painted chalkware sculpture of Jesus as a boy, Mary, and Joseph with the dove of peace over Jesus. Statue is about 12" tall, painted, and fills most of the shadow box area. The lower box area contains a fold down alter platform/ compartment held with a chain and a latch. The latch is fully intact and functions as it should- on it is a picture of the last supper. When opened up it reveals a cloth-lined interior which originally holds a crucifix. Linen and spoon. On the oak edge on each side are the hardware brackets for 2 candle holders; both candle holders are also included. Giving someone Viaticum was a very important moment in the life of a dying Catholic, as the person receiving the Viaticum(Eucharist) believed they were about to exit this world and embark on a journey to the afterlife and could only get there by receiving this last rite.
